Just bought a set of Hammer Blades from Brockthrow.com  Awesome work, thanks again Larry! Now come the questions.

I just put them on, no hammer and tried digging in with them.  I found that I was either popping out of the ground or sitting with my heel a bit off the ground.  I've seen that some people have wooden blocks under their heels but not everyone.  Is there a trick to getting the right angle?  Will the weight of the hammer bring my heel down?  Should I put in blocks under the heel? Does foot size have something to do with it?  Should I ask one more question just to make it 5?

people do like 5...

How much did you experiment with the blades?  You should get the hang of it real quick.  I have a friend that added blocks to the heels, but I dont think you need them.  IMO

Right or wrong...what I am shooting for is to get them in at an angle similar to the bend on the blade.  I have blades from Brock too.  So I kick in to get them at that ~1" below.  This gives me a very slight bit of spring but my heels hit the ground.

I did notice it 'looked' like I was popping the ground up and that I would just spring out...but it never really happened.  In fact in training I just reuse the same spot for multiple throws.

Hardest time I have is getting the points to go in so that my feet line up...or without having one foot torqued just a bit.

Now all that leaves out that this weekend I put my boots aside after first throw and just threw without.  Still haven't found sweet spot on them.

Andrew - On my bootless blade prototype, I put a slightly downward bend in the blade so my heel would remain firmly planted.

Does anyone use just one blade?  I think I remember Lacy using just one so I tried it and felt more comfortable.

I do also - mostly because I need to have the left foot free to correct my
horrible balance. Its a crutch that I need to correct at some point.

When I use it, I use just on 1 foot as it's easier on that knee.  I do believe Mike Pockowski(sp?) uses just 1.

Questions for you hammer boot guys.  How far should one throw in cleats before one considers blades?  I've been hitting 117 pretty consistantly with cleats.  I feel if I can hit a great power position, I feel there is still the capacity to hit in the 120's with cleats.  Being a former wire-hammer thrower I am naturally tenative about having my ankles/knees in a fixed position while trying to rotate/counter.  Can extremely strong hamstrings and incredible balance overcome the need to use blades?  What is the best LH you've heard of with only cleats?  Basically I am looking for any reason to not use the blades, but it seems to break the 120 mark, one would be forced to utilize them.  Sorry about the barage of questions.

Would you wear roller skates to throw the stone in?  Why would you look for a reason to not throw as far as you could?

This is a good point.  Do you think I should keep pushing the cleats into the 120's for the remainder of the season or switch asap and learn the blades.

If you have a goal to hit 120 without 'em, keep going.  Always feels good to hit goals.

But the sooner you learn the blades, the sooner you can throw farther.

Road Warrior, Craig Smith is right.  Dude learn the blades!  It's so much fun.  Once you get the balance down, you can really countersink and get up on your toes and arch when the hammer is behind you.  You can really reef your winds and throw further.  Watch video on Craig's web site of guys throwing hammer.  Watch Larry Brock and Allistar Gunn throw.  Their technique is sick it's so beautiful.  I'm a 62 year old woman.  If I can do it so can you.  Go for it.  Good luck and have fun.
