Subject: Shot put videos

Here are some shot put videos of me... I am throwing in another meet in a
few weeks, so am definitely looking for some help.
Some things I notice, is that my right leg sweep coming out of the back is
not wide enough, and I am doing a little leap in the air, when I should be
trying to get those feet down.

what might help is when your practicing get someone to hold a broom out a little further than your sweep is curently, and work on tryin to kick then broom, focus on tryin to keep both feet as close to the surface as possible. also on some of your fulls you looked like you were startin your spin with your upper body off the back which is causing you to lean off the back which doesn't let you get any seperation until your middle phase if you can keep your upper body behind your legs throughout your entire throw it'll help alot try workin on alot of just 360degree spins and try to begin the spin with just your lower body its also a good drill to work on getting your sweep low and wide. also your over rotating on a few throws in your middle phase and thats mostly because your left is hangin in the air too long if you can get your left down quicker you'll have better position in the ring and you won't get pushed back by the shot near as much.....so yeah and pretty sure i just ramble off a novel i hope it helps you out some, I don't claim to know alot but i think these things might help spencer or Quint could probably help you alot more they know things lotsa things

Feet look ok, it's your left arm that's bothering me. Try keeping it straighter with your thumb pointed up instead of down. I think that'll help your balance in the front.

They're both right. The left arm just look awkward. As far as lower body goes, the feet do need to be a little lower. You have a GREAT move off the back, to the middle, but the right is too high. This causes two things; over rotation and a hanging left. Your body want to keep things on a plane, and when the right enters too high, the left will come around too high. Basically you are starting you finish on one leg, this is why its hard to get out over the toe board. The left has to be down for the right to vault over, causing that perfect mix of vertical and linear power!!! You can see clearly where the left gets down late/too far in your comp throws. This is one of those thing you have to feel work before it really clicks. One other thing I noticed was a very vertical axis. The shot does not have much orbit. When you try to get up on it at the finish, the shot wants to stay with the orbit it started with and you loose some velocity... But it definitely looks like you know what you're doing and chances are you know what you're doing wrong. The speed of the entire thing is great, and the push of the back is good too (just a hair too far across). Well you probably stopped reading halfway through this, but I hope it goes good for you!!!

In the comp, the numbers were down considerably from what I was
throwing in practice, even off that piece of plywood.
I think the 2nd to last one was my best and it was about 40'3 or
something like that. As you can see the wall is very close to the circle
there, and I actually kicked it on my warmup throws. This threw me off a
little bit I think.
Dave, good advice about the left hand/arm, I will try to work on that. I do
see myself leading with the upper body sometimes, if I can keep that arm
a little less active out of the back, I think it will help.
Spencer, when you say orbit, do you mean the angle of attack? So I
should try to be a little lower at the start, and not be so flat? I think the
angle of release looks ok (in my mind) so that I am fighting it then?
Murph, yeah all these things are revealed in the video - I thought I was
doing pretty well on this stuff until I saw the film... hehe, back to the
drawing board.

I think spencer was sayin that maybe if you got a little lower off the back your shot would take more of a low to high path rather than high to high your trajection is probably good but you can put more power into it if your shot takes a low to high path

One way to fix want Spencer said is to shift your weight to your left before you start your leg swing. Your left shoulder is leading you into the center of the ring too much, which causes the right foot to take more of an arced approach instead of a flat approach to the center.
You are missing the center a lot. If train yourself to aim for the center of the ring, you will miss every time. I tell my throwers(and myself) to "aim" for the right ride of the toe board, since you are spinning, the rotation will carry you to the center of the ring. They always think I'm full of crap until they try it.
One thing I've learned over the years: if you have to ask if your were low enough, you aren't. You shot is going from high, to low, to high. You are "gathering" in the middle which kills all the momentum you just put on the shot put. I am gonna take a guess that your half turns are about as good as your full throws?

Great effort Hapy. I really enjoyed watching the video. My only critique is that YOU DID ALL THAT WITHOUT CALLING ME TO TRAIN WITH YOU OR GO TO THE MEET! Seriously Bro, I would love to get into some of that action. Looks like something to get into for next winter.

Thanks, Jeremy, for the hint about aiming for the right side of the ring -
will try that out. On Saturday, I was playing with this a lot, and was
interesting to see where the shot ended up depending on how I turned
my left foot. I definitely need to work on "Sweeping" the right leg/foot, I
think if I can get rid of that "hop" it will help me deliver a lot better.
Bill! Didn't know you were interested in throwing shot! I am throwing in
Burlington on May 8, and was thinking about trying to get in one more
meet somewhere this summer. Otherwise, think Dartmouth Invitationals
in January, and then Masters championships.
I might be in your area more often this summer, and I think you still owe
me an introduction to Olympic Weightlifting lesson

Awesome Hapy. When you are on the way down let me know and we can hit the lifts. I will send you a pm with my cell and home phone. May 8th likely wouldn't work for me but some dates later this summer would. At the very least we could get some meets this summer. Karl Wallen, the prior Dartmouth throws coach is a friend of mine and he can get us into their training facilities and give us coaching as well. I think he coached some guy named Nelson who was a pretty good shot putter.

Sweet! I am definitely up for that, and man, I can definitely use some
coaching - especially since I am deadset on switching to a full rotation on
my stone throws this year.

Dude you look way too young to be a master,
i think you are fine, you just need to do thousands of
practice throws to get the right movement, I know, a job,
mortgage family etc, well don't think about it too much,
just keep throwing and enjoying and you will improve and
improve,
lean over the left at the back, move across the circle
slowly and in a controlled manner, and get over the left
leg again at the finish.
