Our beloved friend and brother in this sport has had a boating accident and is gone. He was in his canoe on Friday and was alone. They were able to find him this afternoon. Pray for the family and may he rest in peace with our Lord.

Spoke with his girlfriend a few times today. She is very
strong for keeping it together for the kids and his
mother. She kept us all informed during the search for
his body. Scott Brantley called a moment ago to inform
me that he was found. All the southern throwers are
pretty much in shock about losing one of our good friends
and ADs. Most of us have thrown with Glenn many times
over the past few years and had a lot of wonderful times
with him. Watching Chafin , Glenn, and Myles picking on
each other at games was hilarious back in the day. We
are all gonna miss Glenn for his great personality and
friendship. He was a loving father of two boys and a
truly great friend. I cannot believe he is gone so soon.
We will never forget him for the man he was... RIP
brother Glenn

Glen was a great man and I cant believe he is gone, Glenn was a great man, and a blast to be around. I stayed at Glens house two years ago and we had a great time. He came up for a clinic a few years back and stayed at my house and we had a blast. Im truly saddened by this. I am in shock . My thoughts and Prayers are with his family.

I can't explain how sad Jess and I are to hear that Glenn is gone. He was one of the first people I met in the games and was always nice to us, even when others weren't. He even taught me a few things in the sheaf. At least I know he's in a better place now, giving out sheaf tips. I pray that God gives his family the strength to pull through. We're gonna miss you Mr. Brightwell.

I have never met Glenn, but simply from the quality of the people sending sympathies he must have been a great person. So I say "go in peace" to a brother in the Highland Games.

This is tragic. I mean really, really tragic. I just got
yet another hilarious text from Glenn just the other day.
Glenn was a tireless supporter of the games and always
opened his home to everyone. This is a huge loss.
I'd like some more detail on what the hell happened if
anybody can provide it.

As I read all of your posts my mind drifts back to Culloden many years ago when Glenn looked at me and said "I can do that" and that began a very special and important time in both of our lives. Glenn considered it an honor and a privilege to take the field with such a wonderful group of people. People he considered family. Friday afternoon his body finally said enough. He was out on the lake behind the house taking pictures of the snow covered banks when we believe that his pacemaker gave out. Ya'll take care of each other and live everyday with purpose and as Glenn would say Throw Far Brother. I'll post more as we know it.

WOW.
I really don't know what to say. I guess I'll share some of my thoughts on Glenn. Glenn was one of the first people to welcome me to the games, he was always really supportive. Back in 2006, his last comp right before he went in for his heart surgery, we were at Waxhaw throwing together. I just hit a PR in the 28, and was super happy. Glenn was the first one to run up to me and give me congrats. For the next 3 throws we worked on his technique and he came out on the last throw with a lifetime best, and his first 60' throw. That was the highlight of my day and the perfect cap to the end of BOTH of our seasons. A man who loved the games, loved being around people, but who's body was giving out. He had a strong finish and reached a new lifetime best in the 11th hour of his career. All with a smile on his face and love for those around him.
The last time I saw him was at Eric's wedding. We shared stories and laughs over a beer. I am sorry I will have to wait to see Glenn in heaven to finish our conversation.
Rest in Peace my friend. You will be missed.

I knew Glenn from about 2001 on. We both started throwing about the same time. I vaguely remeber Glenn is the B's, when we got to the A's it was get the crap kicked out of us every weekend. I remember talking about who was going to come in 4th place would win the game. We got to be good friends. Glenn always had some funny comments to make. He beat me in the sheaf for years and sure let me know about it. He would tell me to put more "pudding" on the sheaf. I am pretty sure we were throwing together the first time he hit 12 in the wob. It was a big deal and everyone celebrated. I rember asking him why he used a towel for the caber, he told me about his pacemaker and I nearly fell over. I thought how is the world is this guy doing this. I guess he just wanted to bad enough.
After several years Glenn's back was bothing him pretty bad. He did not throw for a while. We would talk occasionally, then I saw him throw the last time that I know of at Hartwell in 2008 I think. Glenn was like a kid in a candy store. Doing what he loved to do. We had a blast.
I really feel like Glenn was best at being the AD of the game at Stone Mtn. I had a blast there both years and was treated as well as any place I have ever been. It was an amazing atmosphere.
We still talked a good bit and I will really miss a good friend of mine. It was a pleasure.
One thing I will always rememeber about Glenn was his relationship with his boys. They were always at the games. No matter what was happening in the game Glenn would be telling about whatever the boys were up to. He was very proud.

Got to throw with Glenn at Blairesville 2009 and throw for him at
Stone Mtn the same year. Glenn was a lot of fun with a quick wit.
Thought he did a great job as AD at Stone. I will miss him very much.
At Blairesville several years ago, we were throwing the sheaf in the
rain, as I drove the sheaf down from a big backswing the fork with
sheaf slipped out of my hands. Went 20 some feet at about 2 feet
high. Glenn yelled out "you had the height".
Glenn, you had the height!

Got the chance to meet Glenn @ Loch Hartwell games. This was my first time throwing in a game, and Glenn held a clinic and judged the novices. I wasn't able to throw in '07, and in '08 called Glenn and asked if he needed any help @ Stone Mountain. I was able to help pull tape for the Pros, and Glenn told me to get back to practicing and start competeing again. I did in '09. Glenn came out to a couple of our practices and gave us many tips to use.
As with all that have known Glenn, he will be terribly missed, both as a friend and a competitor.

It's unreal to think that Glenn will no longer be with us. Even though I no longer go to games, Glenn would call and just continue to keep me updated on all our heros on the field. It's so weird that my Mom had just asked about him the day before his passing. We enjoyed he and family staying with us and I loved my visits with them. Glenn never stopped talking about Myles, Chafin, Brantley, Frasure, Brock and others. He had so much love for his friends and would spend hours telling me what they had done. God knew his heart and allowed us to see it too.

I remember Glenn explaining the towel he used over his pacemaker in the caber at Loch Norman that Jeff was talking about. I was a bit stunned as well, thinking this guy knows the dangers involved in this game with his condition, but was willing to take that chance. Which showed how much he loved doing these games. It always made a game that much more worth going to when he was there. Glenn epitomized the fellowship and comradary that has drawn so many of us to these scottish highland games. Glenn was that perfect example of the kind of guy we enjoyed throwing with and his joking and positive attitude will be missed immensely. Also, speaking of positive and fun throwers, it's good to hear from you Chris Cook, we miss you man.
Glenn was always inviting me to come to Stone Mountain and throw. The most recent time was at Eric Frasure's wedding (the last time I saw Glenn). I told him I would love to go and hoped to be able to work it out and attend. Due to my kids sports and birthday parties around mid October, I was never able to attend...... and I regret that. I always wanted to go, especially because they were Glenn's games, but I just couldn't pull it off with our schedule. Perhaps one day, we'll be able to throw together again, and not have to worry about time and schedules and such. That would be nice! Until then, I'll miss you big man!
To Glenn's siblings, parents, sons, Lezli and all others that were close to him, you'll be in my thoughts and prayers. Please take care and don't hesitate to let me know if there is ANYTHING I can do.
Sincerely,
Mark West
