Just curious as to why they did the heavy hammer for the women's rankings? The only region that does the heavy hammer regularly for the women is out west, that I know of. Out here at the East Coast, we just do it once in a blue moon. Kind of sucks for the women out here. Edited by JISurfer |

Other than pros I am not sure why they rank the heavy hammer anyway. Most games go with the light

"Most games go with the light"
...except for 95% of the games I go to. I have thrown in about 40 games in 4 years and I have only thrown the 16# hammer on 3 occasions. Two of those games we actually threw both the heavy and light. Actually the only time I have thrown just the 16# was in Scotland. Brian, you'll see....when (if) you get to SC you will never see a light hammer AGAIN!!! MWUH HA HA HA!! ![]() Edited by KTDupuis |

In New England we do both hammers at all of the games. I think they Midget Hammer should be counted in the rankings. What were there 10 guys who did that at the Pipes in the Valley!

Here in New England, we usually throw both. I can think of only a
couple of occasions where we've only thrown one (if we threw any), and
the Ams threw the heavy and Masters and women threw the light. On
one occasion, the women threw only the heavy, and were dismayed to
learn they weren't also throwing the light (which counted in the
standings).
I think that Ams should be ranked by the heavy, and Masters and women by the light (i.e., the setup until recently). If nothing else, look what happened to the Masters rankings when the change was made: a whole bunch of Masters nearly fell off the charts, because a lot of games only have the light for Masters. -Wayne |

Another question, I'm sure there is a simple answer to this as I have never asked it before but why is this a decathalon type sport doing 6-9 events but to rank athletes you only use 4? I believe RMSA rules require 6 events and some associations require 5 to be considered a games but only 4 events tell us who the best is? I understand you can't do the caber unless we all developed the scoring system for points. I think the interested thing about the sheaf is, they complain about it out west because they don't do it but like Brandall said, we don't do it around here much either. I definately go to more games that do the light hammer as opposed to the heavy. The other problem with the sheaf is that some games do a 16# sheaf and some do 20# so the rankings aren't accurate anyway because you can tell the athletes that have thrown the light sheaf. Anyway, I don't really care, I suck at these games, I just enjoy going out and watching people that don't suck and trying to beat my own PR's but have just aways wondered that question. It's like the Masters world champs this year. I wouldn't want to consider myself the Champion if you were only doing a few of the events. P.S. Brandall, I wrote this in one paragraph because I know you like it when I do that. |

Let us all remember...the rankings provided by this site are very appreciated, and really cool, and completely meaningless.
With the exception of a few pro games that use the ranking for entry, the amateur ranking system is just for fun. It gives you an basic idea about where you are. Give or take 10-15 spots. It is in no way an indication of who is better than who (or whom?). Given the variations across N. America in games, I think the 4 events chosen are the most commonly contested. Plus there is a rank for at least one style of each event...a stone, a weight throw, a hammer, and a height event. |

I know yiu need it, but how can you rank the stone? Every games uses a differnt stone, the weights all varry. Do they just renk on the distance or is there some formula to balance the weight and distance... Wayne is there some kind of Pathagarian thing we need to use? What is better a 17.9 lbs stone 50 feet or a 16.9 lbs stone 50 feet 6????

its not a perfect system but it works and as KTD says gives you a rough idea of where you stand..I think Kurt should be commended for giving us this tool...the only spot where it should be perfect is pro-rankings where top games are decided who is getting invited otherwise just use it as guide

The qualification for the open stone ranking is that the stone weighs at least 16.00 pounds. If the stone weighs less than that there is a box you are supposed to click so that the throws made with a less than 16# stone aren't included in the rankings. That means that you are at a disadvantage as far as the rankings go if you are throwing a stone substantially heavier than 16# in the open style.

I just think the system is a fun one. Don't take it too serious. Just
keep beating pr's, then field records and maybe a World Record. It all
works out in the end

I thought you would like that big paragraph Brandall. I apologize to all for implying that I cared about what events were contested in the overall ranking. I meant to imply otherwise when I stated, "I suck at these games, I just enjoy going out and watching people that are good at it AND beating my PR's". I was just asking since we keep rankings in each event, 8 total not including caber, why only 4 were included in the overall ranking. I look at this site everyday and appreciate the site, games and AD's a great deal I was just asking. I didn't mean to be taken the way I came across apparantly. |

Uh yeeeeeeeah... I was just curious about the chicas, not the hombres. As for hombres, I myself have only done one games with a light hammer, that was out in Cali. Any rate, yes, they did the rankings with the light hammer last year for the women, so why not continue it this year. Most women's games do just light hammer anyways, unless you are out west somewhere. Then, they get rid of the sheaf. Yeah Dwood, Jess and I open up this weekend. After that, we go to Aiken on the 23rd? of April. After that, God only knows. We'll see how she comes out on grad day to see how much we'll be traveling |

So I guess nobody really knows why they changed the women's hammer to the heavy hammer on the rankings then? Oh well, guess "Only God Knows Why". |

Two things, One, Brandall, I haven't seen you at KC for years. Two, I hadn't really thought much about this hammer question, because every part of the us is just different, Brandall is right, we don't throw the heavy hammer very often, I can count on one hand the number of games I have thrown the heavy hammer. Just like they don't throw the sheaf in California. However, my point is I was looking on the Database at the pro's throws on the rankings and I noticed that there were 17 of them that didn't have a Heavy Hammer throw in for the year. I then looked at women, lightweights and then A's and noticed that lots of each of them didn't have heavy hammer throws, ALOT more than any of the other events. Again, I just like having something to compare with the others, just noticed it and thought of this thread. |

Surfer, You have to excuse the boys who dont seem to know when to find another thread to chat on. (ahem) I'm not sure why they changed (if they have changed) the rankings on LADIES heavy hammer. I know that it is at very few games (2) that I have had to throw heavy hammer. Interesting question however. Thom is right, it's like some areas have sheaf and some dont, so it kinda makes it hard to have the "Rankings" right when not everybody throws all the same events. Rankings on NASGA or any board just mainly give a person an idea of where they are in stats because of the diffences in the games. Dont know if this helped ya with anything but atleast a "Chica" tried for a response to your question. Have a great week!
