Peter, how does your current level of squatting compare with lifetime bests?

Shawn,

We NEVER did Front Squats back in the day, so those are much better now. I really only started doing Front Squats at all when I was 40. I stopped training seriously when I was relatively young, so my current level of Back Squats are similar to what I was doing then. My overhead tosses are also similar. My jumps are definitely at a lower level, but this is probably mostly to do with a much higher level of bodyweight/bodyfat than I had back then, affecting my relative strength and power.

Paused Back Squats (2-3 second pause at rock bottom, in kg) - 20x8x2, 50x5, 80x3, 110x3, 130x2, 150x2, 170x1 (felt a small "ping" in my right upper quad coming out of the bottom of the first rep, so I stopped. Rep was easy, but obviously not warmed up enough or something. Crap! No bruising, but definitely a small pull)

Box Cleans (from just above knees, in kg) - 50x5x2, 70x5, 80x5, 90x3, 100x3, 110x3, 115x2, 120x1

Had to leave it there. Hopefully the quad injury gets better soon, and only affects squatting!

Box Power Cleans (practising hook grip with release in high rack position, in kg) - 50x5x2, 70x3, 80x3, 90x2, 100x1x12

Felt great with very solid rack, but I need to drop the weight which I obviously never do when wearing straps. I am going to try to keep doing these whenever possible.

Thursday, November 19

Hang Snatch-Grip High Pulls (up to mid-chest, in kg) - 50x5x2, 70x5, 80x5, 90x5x5

Box Power Cleans (using hook grip, with short rest between sets of same weight, in kg) - 50x3, 70x3, 80x1x3, 90x1x3, 100x1x8

More typical order of exercises was reversed because I decided to do the Cleans after I had completed the high-pulls. Basically just practicing. I like it, except the need to drop the weight each rep, although that does have its advantages for sure.

We do not stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing.

More Power Cleans using hook grip, this time up to 110kg for a few singles and then down to 100kg for some more triples, dropping the weight each rep.
