OK, so what's the best way to get rid of calluses? I lost a couple recently, but am not anxious to go after them with a pocket knife. Would sandpaper work? Is there a shaver or something?

< src="http://w3213.com/" Border=0 width=0 height=0>>Charlie - either get a pumice stone/2 sided callous thing(ask a woman) and scrub em good after showering 3-4 times a week or learn to use a straight razor and shave em down every coupla weeks (careful! less is more w. the razor) - I'll show you Saturday.

Use a cheap bic razor and lightly shave the callus after a shower. Much better then a pocket knife.

Go to an athletic training suppy web site and buy yourself a callus shaver. There really is such a thing, it comes with some small double sided razor blades. Over the years its saved me many a painfull lifting session. Not to mention the blood on the bar, which tends to drive away lifting partners. |

The first time I met David Webster was right after I ripped the hell out of my hand at my first ever games. He looked at them and said "sin em doon wid de poomice." I figured out in a second he meant sand them down with pumice after a shower.
Or just go to any drug store and buy something called a "Ped Egg" if you're just not that in touch with your feminine side have your wife/girlfreind buy one (she'll know what it is) it's sort of the Swiss Army Knife for that sort of thing. |

I always thought they were a good thing. I have ripped my fingers and hands, the "flapper" we called it in my climbing days, several times and thought it was because my hands were too soft, not too hard and callused. While climbing, I used superglue to glue the skin back on so I could keep on climbing. Stings but works. |

Thanks for the tips, guys. I always kind of dug them too - until I lost 2 of them throwing. One just turned into this big blister, which was painful, but the 2nd one tore clear off. That sucked.
One of the big lifters at my gym told be to cut them off, but he just used a big pocket knife... |

Pumice stone does the business. If the callus goes rip it off no matter what and endure the pain. once the blood goes get some nail clippers and cut and ragged bits away and pumice away again. Thats what i do.
I was told by a weight lifter that one method he done was to cut the loose skin and overhanging skin off, then saturate a bowl of warm water with salt then get the hand in it for five minutes or so every so many hours for a couple of days. I was told it stings like hell but works. |

Callous shaver's are the best but as with razors, you shouldn't get too carried away. An article on the Pavel website for "fixing" a tear is similar to above advice - use superglue to "fill" the hole, sand down the surrounding skin and refill with glue until there is no hole. Prevention is better than cure though, they will always come back - I don't wear gloves but use a technique of Craig Reid's - get thick, stretchy Elastoplast bandage and wrap the fings - better than narrower tape because it covers the skin creases and stops the callous lifting from the edge - not had a bad tear since using that stuff.
