    Posted: 3/06/08 at 8:21am

Greetings.

I am fairly new to the highland games ( I competed 3 times last year) and I was wondering if anyone had any input on the best way to throw the open stone??  I have heard reference to three distinct style the glide, the shuffle and the spin. Which is most effective? Which is easiest to learn? What do you prefer?

Up until now I just throw the open stone the same way I throw Braemer Stone, but i would really like to learn a technique and add some distance to my throws.

thanks.

Before someone responds with a detailed breakdown of
each technique and their advantages/disadvantages,
here's a short, simple version.

If you're athletic (mobile, coordinated, balanced) and
very powerful, glide. It's the most consistent. If
you're powerful and very athletic, spin. Harder to
learn, less consistent, seems to go farther when you hit
it right. If you're just an average schlub, not
particularly athletic, shuffle. Much easier to learn and
execute, won't go as far but at least you can learn to
hit a decent power position and explode into the throw
while you work away from the trig on your athleticism.

Keith-

I'd say try to learn the glide. In my opinion, it's almost as easy to learn as the shuffle, and it will give you a lot better gains. I've seen many non-athletic people learn how to glide well enough to see improvements over the shuffle and braemar. Plus if you ever want to learn the spin later on, the glide is a good stepping stone to have for reference.

I am learning the spin. Should prove interesting the first few games. Watch out for tremers.

What hppens if he spins using a reverse rotation?

I see Bob has answered that question.

Remember when spinning, the stone will need to reach escape velocity for it to escape your gravitational well.

One can use the gravity slingshot effect to accelerate an object but I found in WIkipedia that it has limitations:

If a stone gets close to the Schwarzschild radius of a black hole (a.k.a. the ultimate gravity well which some have aledged to be Bob's stomach ), space becomes so curved that slingshot orbits require more energy to escape than the energy that could be added by the black hole's motion.  However, a  rotating black hole might provide additional assistance, if its spin axis points the right way.

This all means that you need to keep that stone tucked in to your neck when doing the spin!

I cant say spin to win, but I think the spin is easier than the gluid. But I do both poorly, and I threw Disc very well and never threw shot worth a dam in school.

And besides, with the glide you get to use both hands...right?

Keep up the great advice gentlemen!

I started working the glide late last year with some success.  A question I have when I attempt the spin I seem to open up way to early with my arm separating from my body, any tips on how to stop this?  Or is just a case of continual practice...

Mc I would glide until I got a little more profecient at it.  The basic idea is easier to get going, and as stated by others it is much more consistent.  Once the glide starts going better you will have established the type of specific strength necessary to begin hitting better positions in the rotational style.

If you don't have time to do it right, when are you going to have time to do it over?

If your speaking of your left arm being to open when you hit it, I make my guys literally hold onto there shirt on their right side a few times, release the shirt when the force of your upper body makes your left arm come around, its mostly a timing drill but it worked for me & my guys.

Does that make since? or put a watch on and keep your eyes on it as you rotate, and always keeping your chin up and chest out.

and along with the other 43 things your supposed to be doing....LOL

Josh-

Try placing the stone right under your ear, behind your jaw, and jam it in there tight. When you glide you should have the stone against your jaw, but you need it further back in the spin to keep it from coming off too early like you are describing.

Thanks I'm going to try that, I was keeping in the same place for both the glide and spin.

Im a spinner but like others I sugest the glide at first. Just try to keep  over yourright leg when you hit the power position with your sholders square or slightly cocked. Left down and right torqued back and up. Think of reaching out with your left hand and shaking hands with the midget. Lower body moves first and legs. Then when you move forward and up on the legs let the body unwind like a spring. Lastly hit the giant with your left elbow in his jaw. This will pull the right sholder around. Then ................ oh boy this gets long. Try to go back to the old forum and look this up. I and others have written a lot on this a couple of years ago. If you have thrown discus then the rotation is similer to a South African

I have decided to spin - this way I can look uncoordinated doing something fancy rather than just looking clumsy doing the shuffle - the results should about the same, stone in the circle, me outside but perhaps further outside

I have to agree with everyone here, go with the glide first.  And listen to Quint.  I threw against him in college and he's a big time shot thrower.  He's right on with the positions you can hit in a glide.  Once you hit those positions and get your body accustomed, then you can go for the spin.  The spin can, I believe, create the greatest torque and power.  But, that's not to say the glide can't make you throw bombs, history proves that you can.

For what it's worth, the longest stone throw in the
country last year, Dan Royal's 57' 6" at the Anne
Arundel games, was done with the glide.

Also, 2 of the top 4 Pro throws in the OS were a glide.

thanks.

Looks like i am going to work on the glide, and hopefully my lack of coordination won't make me look too retarded.

I'll send you an email later this week.  We're looking at trying to practice in Rockford this Sat.  We just want to confirm the weather first.
