serious inquires only.... Question #1-in past discusions with HBIII about the spin-he stated to me if you can throw the heavy wfd over 40 feet(56 for pro's and amtr...42 for masters...28 for women)then you would be able to benefit with the spin...do you think it would benefit someone who throws hwfd under 40 or should they wait till thye reach 40 feet?? Question #2-the only people I have seen do the spin were higher end pro's-out of all the pro games that you attended how many allowed the spin(i am not getting into the debate as each games it is up to the Ad-who has to consider-field size-expierence of athlete-quality of uprighgts, etc) just curiuos...thanks guys |

#1 - It's more about being proficient at technique. As a general rule i would totally agree with the 40'. However, in the real world i look and lannie and know he's getting his spin on without the 40' part of the equation. I think it's just more hit or miss if you're not throwing consistent 40'+ #2 - the majority. unfortunately ;-) |

I know I have seen Terry Smith spin, and I don't believe he is a 40+ thrower. Lannie is a freak of technique... |

dan - I've always wondered why more masters don't spin the 42 - if you just learn the technique and hold onto it (forget about lifting it etc) it will throw itself at least 16' just on inertia from the swing.

I've practiced a bit and when I hit 18-3 standing was able to go up a foot(cleared 19-1 by a few inches)..but the majority games I went to either spin wasn't allowed, ground wasn't suitable enough for spinning(uprights in tight corner),or Stewrt guilted me into not using it

I do spin and have gotten 16 feet and hit the bar at 17...I have hit 36 with the hwfd a few times... so I think that shows my need to work on the wfd as I am not getting the distance I think I should. I think anyone under 5'11" with short arms like me should look to it

Wow that is really interesting. I throw just at 40 feet with the heavy weight, and my spin is currently right at the same height as my stand. That's cool. Of course, I've only tried the spin but a couple of times. I imagine if I practiced, I should be throwing higher... what a concept!

I do wonder if the same #'s or percentages would match up between the 42 and the 56....

As a 40 yr old master I have thrown the 42# wob spinning 17' , just missed at 17'6". Previous best standing was 16 '. I switched to the spin midseason with very little practice and went up 1 foot, almost a foot and a half ! And I have little technique to speak of. Just fyi I was never close to 40' in the 56- (pr was low 30's). WOB with the 56 was 14' (pr a few years ago) ,this year 13'6" wob in 56. Standing WOB with 56 is the same as spinning for me , no increase ? My 42# WFD is not that great either @ 39'5", havn't hit 40 yet , next years goal 40 +, and 18' wob. Dont know if this helps with your question , really ? But the spin in the 42 has worked for me, a mediocre thrower with not much technique. Edited by ken crum |

I don't like to put things out there that i dont have on video or can't verify. and i have no intention of ever throwing the 42 again. it was one practice, while i was trying to learn the spin in the 56 years ago. ill just say that it was significantly over the masters WR. I'm sure that someone like HB3, Brock, etc, etc... could put up a sick number. |

I'm way under 40 with 56, usually low 30's. My best ever standing is 14 & I only did that once. I'd say not getting 14 is the exception spinning and I finally hit 15 last weekend. I had heard that 40 foot idea also and I think Sean Betz said Vierra thought everyone should spin so I have it a shot and tied my pr the 1st time I did it in a comp.

Danny, i can say with a great degree of certainty that i won't be throwing 8 years from now. I already dont practice or put forth any effort, i figure its only a matter of time til my throws are awful. Once they start going down that's it. Heck, this year was the first year of my competative retirement |

hey you had a good year including some monster stone throws..train hard in the off-season,heal up the bangs and dings, and come back hungry for 2008 Started a new job in Sept-private security firm that provides security for rich kids at school(stupid rich)well I work at one school and Terri works at another-we were checking her schools weight room out-SCORE...6 platforms(never used)tons of bumpers/bars,reverse hyper, glute ham, plyo boxes, cool smith(for bench throws),d/bs,med ball 5-50..and lots of space-apparently little rich kids don't like to sweat so we have it all to ourselves...has me motivated to lift for first time in a while(when i wroked at the gym-lifting was a chore after being there all day)..hopefully have a functional off season |

I don't remember saying that 40ft is the marker but hey I forget alot of things. If I did, I would retract that statement and just say that you need to be technically sound in the wfd first. The movement is very similar. I would also strongly recommend know how to stand first. THat is the incredible thing about this sport, you must be able to adapt. Standing also builds some stablized strength that is needed. As for the # of games allowing it, I have gone to very few US games that don't allow it on the pro level. I think that is more common with non-pro games. |

I think you said the 40 foot thing to me when you fist started using the spin..when i sent you a Pm-but its just a guideline...As an AD I would be more comfartable with a pro spinning than an amtr as the pro probably is a lot more effecient at it and would save my uprights

The funny thing is, I have seen many more uprights damaged from standing than spinning. I think it is just a matter of practice. Pro/AM/Master/Male/Female - practice is key.

Hey, Does anyone have any good videos on spinning WOB technique? I'm stuck at 16' standing with the 42#, and want to keep going. My WFD spin is finally getting more consistent and reliable, but I've just toyed with spinning for height, and I could use something to watch. Thanks, and I'll hang up and listen you your answers.... |
