hey, im tom wakem. i live right outside of portland maine. ive decided to compete in the maine highland games this august. ive never thrown before, not even in track. i got interested because im scotish and im quite strong for just 16. id like to kow what to do next, anything will be greatly helpful.
5' 9"
225lbs
bench: 1rm 250
squat: 1rm 315
deadlift: 1rm 355
clean: 1rm 200

never thrown before, but ive played football.

Hey Tom, welcome. I am the athletics director for the Maine Games and I can help you in regards to the games.

Yeah, those are good number for 16 for sure.

Do you throw for your school?

thanks, ive been lifting for football for 18 months now. i was gunna do outdoor track this spring, but i was to lazy. but ive thrown with my buddies (theyve got decent size round rocks) just for shits and giggles. Braemar Stone style.

Hey bud, I'm new to the games too but I've been throwing shot and discus for about 8 years (and hammer the past 2 years since I started college.)  I've competed in 1 games so far, last august and I can tell you that throwing helps... alot.  So if you think this is something you would like to get into, I'd recomend throwing for your school too... its great cross training either way and its not too late to start this season.  And I know some highschools out east have hammer too, so that would be another great event help you learn some of the standard principals of the games events.

I tell ya. My boss would be pissed if she saw this thread.... I took notes at the 7 Habits thing I went to 10 years ago, but I must have missed the whole "Listen to understand, not to respond...." part.

But, it is good to know someone will be there to point and laugh when I miss the obvious.
