As the subject says, I'm a newbie lady in Kansas City.  I have attended several highland games, but it wasn't until recently that I figured out that women could compete in them.  Thus, here I am.  I have recently started a much heavier weight training regime (I’ve been a fencer and a swimmer most of my life, so I’m working on building strength up).  What I’m trying to find out is how does one get going?  I’ve found some training videos which I plan to purchase, but are there any other little tips and tricks to get going?

Thank you.  :)

Hey Ashley, welcome to the Highland Family!!! If you can meet up with some local Kansas throwers that would be the best. Also if you are interested we are having a weekend Women's training camp on March 31-April 1st 2007 in St. Louis, MO. We have tons of women of all skill levels & ages coming, so if you are interested just give me an email at karyndallimore@hotmail.com & I can give you more info & form to fill out. Good luck & hope to maybe see you in St. Louis. cheers - Karyn

Red Dragon,

My name is Lori Henderson and my husband Kevin and I AD the KC Highland games held in Riverside, MO on June 8-9, 2007.  We also are involved in several things in the KC area during the year and have a core of KC area athletes.  You are welcome to email me at birdymom2@yahoo.com for more info.  We will be sending out registrations the first of May.  Last year we had enough women that we were able to divide them up into A and B and look to do that again this year.

Lori,

Wow! 2 groups of women. That's impressive. I'm sure it's very well run.   I'd love to make it to your games. Won't be this year... maybe next year!  Gather up those newbies!!  -Denise

Denise,

Yeah it was pretty cool for them.  I am not an athlete but I support the women and Cherie is my good friend and probably wouldn't talk to me anymore if I didn't!  We run a pretty tight ship, Kevin is very organized; had 73 on the field and got done by 5pm!  See you at Mac in September.

Wow!  Thanks for all the fantastic replies.  Unfortunately I won't be able to attend the workshop in St. Louis due to school (I have some crazy school hours), but will for sure be at the KC Highland Games.

Lori, I will for sure be contacting you as I want to find out as much as possible about stuff in the KC area.

Again, thank you everyone.  :)

RD- Your tartan is???????????

It looks like Brown (Clan that is)

Contact me any way whether we get to have ya around or not! Trying to get a working women's contact database so that I can let ladies know of up coming games and where they are. You could come either day if you cant make the whole weekend. That would let ya met some of the other ladies in the sport and get some type of throwing advice.

Glad you posted too!

Lori, you know that I'd love ya no matter what!

Thanks for plugging for us girls. Without you, I dont know what we'd do in KC!

Love to all,

Cherie

My tartan is the Wallace tartan.

Perhaps having a women's throwing forum would be nice.  Of course the guys could put in their two cents as well, but have it a place for women's training etc.
