I had a great Coach Rich Lalami (lionheart) Helped Jim Schmitz with his weightlifing book. Great man, good friend. He told me you can learn from anyone if your open to it. You all brought some great info to the table. I know I learned allot from it. A tip for those of you who are going to try Oly lifting, have someone watch you that knows what to watch for. Craig I know I could get you to love these lifts, but not take away from what your doing now. The games are about strength, speed, agility and tech and everyone has to find the right mixture that works for them and what goes on in there lives. I love to throw but my lifting is now down to 15 lb presses with my 5 month old. He is making me stronger in ways I never imagined because I was not open to it until now. Were all throwing from the same place our heart and thats what we all have in common. Good luck this season. |

" I'm much smaller, but I throw farther."... How much further? Does it really help that much? Did it really help WOB? At this point, I'll try anything (well, nearly anything).

A chin up is an inverted power clean
. What is even more of a challenge would be to perform an inverted clean width snatch. I have see it done but not very often. Have fun.

Do you mean a muscle-up? I'd really like to try those, now that I
understand the basic technique, but don't have an appropriate bar
(ceiling's too low).
If you mean a genuine single-motion lift that's equivalent to a reverse snatch, that's something else again. -Wayne |

It's sort of a muscle up but when I think muscle up I think of Gymnastic rings. I have seen guys actually perform a pull up with enough strength and speed they could get up over the bar with thier chest and press out. Mostly Vaulters but a Jav thrower or two who had good strength to weight ratio. I was never able to get the transition on top of the bar.

I'll have to see if I can find a video a guy sent me on this (no luck so far). He demonstrates the transition over the bar very clearly. There are two tricks:

Craig, Find the book I mentioned By Jim Schmitz he sells it through Ironmind. You should have it in your Library any how. Then get a closet dowel about 6 to 7 feet long. and practice with that for a month. Yes I know it's light. Don't worry about the top end rack of the clean, if your arms are bigger than average you won't rack well. that is just an occupational hazard. Your start position for both these lifts are very important. It is called addressing the bar. The book covers that. The USWF put a great training tape out at one time it goes over tech really well. Craig this is my belief, that for the highland games you do not need to catch the bar for a clean just drop it. keep your reps low. The explosion used for these lifts is like Sumo except it is straight up and close to the body(the bar). Start very slow. I'm sure at some point we can talk about muscle snatches and overhead squats. If you do decide to do push presses, jerks and snatches these tips are very good, push through ears and and keep pushing. If you can clean it you can jerk it. They are great lifts. I'm certain there are people in your area who do this stuff. If I find Jim Schmitz phone number I will give it to you, he might know someone in your area. He is a great guy. You could always video yourself doing a clean with light weight and I could break it down for you. Take it from the side and show the feet. I'm not holden a gun to you. My philosophy is give'm a plate if they choose to eat great if not fine. |

You have real good tech on everything I see so far. If you screw around with 300lbs. then drop it to 2 bills and 1.roll the bar over the balls of your feet, 2.pull the slack out of the bar before you lift. 3.Chest up, 4.look up, 5.shoulders back, 6.back arched not rounded. 7.then bang! fire the bar travels to just above the knees7. close the door with the pecker(heels leave the ground) 8.huge shrug. the bar is basically hello to upper chest or chin with that light weight. let go at highest position do not sink under the bar to catch it. do not do rapid reps. take the time to set it up. rushing through these are no bueno. Why things get ugly is your moving to slow because the weight is to great or your to tired. if the bar is banged to far out in front of you, you will step forward. if you step backwards the shrug might not have been there and you weren't on your toes. That might be some of it. I look forward to seeing the clean.
