New A.D. here with a question. Do cabers need to be completely smooth? Or is that just cosmetic?

it would be nice to at least have a few feet on the end they pick to be smooth so you do not give anyone splinters.

The rougher the caber is, the more the athletes will complain. I use an angle grinder with a sanding disk to clean our cabers up and get the rough spots smoothed out.

The cabers are smooth at the bottom so that they aren't hard on the athlete's hands or shoulder. The top foot or so is smooth also. All the cabers I have thrown have been smooth the entire length. I was just curious if it was a requirement. The athletes at the Black and White days Highland Games will have some good caber to throw.

Sounds good! Good luck with the games and I hope you have a better turnout than you could hope for!

Caber (or cabar) is defined as a debarked tree, but I find a bit of bark left on the upper part has an aesthetic appeal. I will remove bark about six and a half feet up from the gripping end on hardwood cabars. If your sticks are stored indoors when not in use, the bark will not fall off. In the '90s I competed at an event where the A.D did not round off the business end and the sharp edge felt as if it was cutting into my hands. Bark or no bark, whatever you prefer.
The cabar wasn't too big, you weren't strong enough.
