So, where do you practice WOB? I saw the "cheap and easy WOB" DIY, which is cool, but even torn down wouldn't fit in my car

I don't have any land, so I cant build anything permanent, and I doubt the pipeline company wants me building on their right-of-way

I need a bar, even a fixed height (14-15) to throw over. I cant just practice throwing the weight up in the air, I already do enough throws in competition that go straight up and straight down

Thanks
John

^^^

Or a baseball backstop.  Some have sections that progressively get lower.  You may find some that are 15' or so.  Don't throw INTO the field though.  lol.

The problem I always found with backstops is the fencing goes all the way to the ground (obv), so you have to stand further out than you normally would when throwing WOB.

Something > nothing, though.

I know a few guys who throw over swing sets. Not sure on the height. I bet some of the taller ones can get around 15'.

1. find something high (20'+) you can throw a rope over (tree branch works best)

2. tie the end of a rope to a garbage can lid, or something else flat.

3. toss it over and tie it off, you can lower and raise it.

4. practice by hitting the can lid with the weight.

Should be cheap, easy, adjustable, and will also help you with aim/consistency.

Hapy, that is the coolest, low tech, out of the box idea. I never would have thought of that, and I was already trying to figure out how to hang out in dicey playgrounds with tall swingsets without getting arrested for being a giant bald man hanging out in dicey playgrounds.
You helped me with hand placement in stones...season PR, now this! I may just have to become a groupie and follow you around

Any actual benefit from anything I write is purely by accident.

Great idea! I wouldn't have thought of this either. I put together a rickety contraption the other day and anchored it in our yard. The wife was not pleased. I don't blame her. It looked like hell too. And took me way more time than it should have to put together. Then it fell apart the one time I hit it with my homemade 42lb WOB.

That is outstanding, and pretty close to what Hapy suggested. and sadly, I never would of thought of that

Do you attach a Linear Distance Determination Device to the bar so you know how high it is?

havent got a photo to post but hopefully explanation will be clear.
Total cost about $30
1 x 4' 6"star picket (metal fencing post)
12'3" of 65mm PVC pile
6' of 20mm PVC pipe
1 4' x 1/2" bolt

mark 1' from the bottom of the star picket (thats your ground mark when you hammer it into the ground)
drill a hole through the star picket at 3' from your ground mark thats your locking hole.

65mm PVC is your upright.  Drill a 20mm hole at the 12' mark and fit the 20mm pvc into the hole extend an inch through the pipe thats your adjustable cross bar.
then repeat this same hole at the 11' and 10' mark (also lower if needed)
Then at 90 degree to the cross bar hole drill a small hole on the upright from the bottom at the 1' - 2' - and 3' position.  This lines up with the locking hole in the start picket

Hammer start picket into the ground to the mark. slide upright over the start picket and set at ground level.  with the cross bar in the 10' mark your cross bar is now set at 10'
start throwing
Using the bolt raise the upright up a foot and position it where the holes line up and put bolt through, bar now at 11'
repeat again bar now at 12 foot.
then by quickly taking down and adjusting the cross bar up the additional top holes you can get to 13, 14  foot.
if you need higher just start with a longer upright pole of PVC 65mm
Holes can be set at 6" intevals but not less as it weakens the PVC pipe

This is very very light. all pulls apart, cheap and easily transportable on most cars and roofrack type things or easy fit in small backyards.

hope its clear.

I am using something simple

two - 2" pvc pipe cut exactly 6 feet each
two - 2" X 2" aluminum studs 9 or 10 feet long. Mark with sharpie line every foot
40 feet of light duty rope and one - 10 foot straight, light, electrical conduit (3/4")
2 carabiners attached to top of each stud (might have to drill holes)
two heavy duty spring clamps

Pound 2 stakes of wood or metal (small enough for pvc pipe to sleeve over) into ground at width required for practice and sticking out about 2'
slide 6 foot pipe overtop each
place metal stud in pipe making sure rope is threaded through conduit and carabiners at top first
raise stud to height required using sharpie foot measurements
Clamp stud at mark at top of 6' pipe so does not slide down into pipe
Tie rope to one clamp then hoist rope tight on other side or let conduit dangle level, and tie onto clamp

Gets me a 9 - 14 foot uprights for practice and was cheap to build/salvage, is adjustable and easy to travel with.  Now if I only could throw those heights!!

Not to mention it is very possible to get the handle stuck on the fencing, so someone has to climb up to get it down. Done that a couple times.
I'm just an idiot, pretending to be smart.
