Wow thank you guys for all the responses. I haven't had a chance to look at all of them but one said keep in mind what you are conditioning for or something similar.
The answer is three things 1) I'm 47 with kids as young as 6. Want to be around long enough to see them get old. 2) I do the occasional strongman. Conditioning comes in handy on some of the lighter events. 3) It's fun. Every now and then I like to play around on a mountain bike or hike, or XC ski (alot of late). Things like that are more fun when you don't explode 5 minutes in.
I'll hopefully be looking these all over now. Thanks again.

Thanks again, lots of good info. As for hijacking the thread (threadjacking). Please feel free to do so. I would be dissapointed if you didn't. |

Chad Smith makes some good points in this new video, and also gives a nice shout out for Matso's new book.
The chart (or perhaps an older version) Chad refers to in his talk can be found by searching for the following. I cannot import it here for some reason. THE PERFORMANCE STRUCTURE OF REESE HOFFA By Don Babbitt, University of Georgia |

Hey, Gnome. Check out Dan John and Pavel Tsatsouline's Easy Strength. There's a lot of great information on how to develop sport-specific strength without hurting yourself, especially as you get older. Dan John's forum on Dave Draper's site (www.davedraper.com) is a good resource, too.
Dan John's a champion Scottish thrower, too, so he can answer a lot of questions about this. For me...I train the quick lifts once per week, but it's extremely low volume (five sets of doubles or even less) in the power snatch and hang clean. Everything else is a push, pull, hip hinge (deadlift, KB swing, KB snatch, etc), squat, and throw.

I have no experience with highland games. I literally just got the idea to compete in them yesterday. However, I have won the APF Texas Cup in the super heavyweight raw division for two years running now so I definitely know my way around a weight room. If you're looking for speed training I would recommend starting with straight weights, no bands, and using 40-50% of your 1RM for your speed work. Keep in mind that the speed of the bar is what's important, not the weight lifted, so if you need to go to 30% to keep your movements explosive then that's okay. It's also okay to go as high as 70%-75% as long as you can move the bar fast. 10 sets of 2-4 repetitions is the rule of thumb for speed training. I also like to train with a dead stop on speed lifts so doing box/pause squat variations and paused or dead stop bench press/overhead press variations would be best. If you decide to use some sort of accomodated resistance, I would use chains before bands for reasons outside the scope of this post. And keep the chain weight light. You're not an equipped powerlifter so there's no need to put 200lbs of chain on a lift. I would keep chain weight at about 10% of the total weight used. I hope this helps and good luck to you.
