I posted this on my training log, but I think it is all mixed in and no one is cathcing it.

Wednesday 5/2/12 I took about 8 warmup standing throws and 3 MSA throws MSA's hitting around 37' again.  Then I decided to take a few more standing throws.  My first standing after hitting the MSA's was 39'.  Then I hit two more at 40' trying to get taller and snapping off the start more.

I had a friend come and try his hand at the stone, and on my last throw I drew back to snap, and we both heard an audible POP. I had a pain at the right back side of my right knee. Then the pain transferred to the belly of my hamstring.

I have torn muscles before, and this seems minor. I have a PL competition on Saturday.

This morning I had a very small bruise on the back of my knee. My leg is a little stiff with no visible limp.

I would like to know what others think about me competing in the PL competition so soon.  Is there an extreme risk of further tearing the muscle, or should I just let pain be my guide.

I did some light RDL's after the tear last night, and they weren't too painful.  But I could definetly tell there was an injury. I immeadiately iced the injury off and on for an hour last night. I plan to continue icing periodically today and tomorrow, and do some light RDL's, stretching and maybe some slow throwing this afternoon and tomorrow just to go through the range of motion.

I am also planning to compete in Prescott next weekend, and honestly I would much rather compete in the HG than at the PL meet.

Thanks in advance.

Only you can answer that, dude. How much stress are your hamstrings normally under during your lifts? Meaning are you hamstring or quad-dominant for squatting, pulling, etc? How sore is it? Could you lacrosse ball the hell out of it and get it smooth and working? Can you grab a massage today? How important is this meet vs the rest of your season?

Answer those and you've probably got your plan of action.

+1

If HG is more important to you than the PL meet, skip the meet or bench only. I would get into an ice bath every single night until the Prescott games. I also would not train until probably saturday to allow it the initial time to heal and start forming scar tissue. Stretch, foam roll, lacrosse ball. Starting tomorrow, I would work the muscle, note: not train it. Get on a leg curl machine or lay face down and do leg curls against a band. VERY light, think 50 reps x 2-3 sets 2-3 times per day. ice/heat several times per day. On sunday, start doing one leg stiff leg deads w/bodyweight (still no weight). Keep up the ice/heat and ice baths... play it by ear but push it a bit more next week. If you even feel a slight pinch, lay off a little. Good luck!!
