...and to continue this line of questioning...

are we(myself included) doing zercher squats to improve our caber strength?  I was under that impression.  It's the closest thing in the "normal" gym that is like picking a caber, right?  Or am I missing something?

to improve caber strength and get better at throwing cabers...

...pick and throw lots of cabers.

(see matt V. blog for tutorial on making one if you need some, make a few different lengths and weights).

Thank you sir.  That is what everyone keeps telling me, and it is surely sound advice.  But I was just curious about the "in gym" or none throwing day type of work that could be done as well.  I did not know Matt had caber making instructions on his blog so  appreciate that tid bit of info as well.

I don't have a large space, so what would you say is the safest and easiest way to transport a caber, or do you all generally leave your cabers in the fields in which you practice(who wants to steal a big friggin telephone pole anyways huh?).  Just another curiousity.  Because I am trying to get a club going in Northern Cal and I only need a caber and something to throw a weight over...the rest I have made.  BUt I do not have a truck to transport cabers nor a large field sized back yard to go tossing a caber.

Nothing done in the gym will translate like you want it to.  Get strong/fast/explosive/etc in the gym, learn to throw far on the field.

And ya, just leave the caber at the field.

Thanks guys.

I just thought Zercher squats were good, but personally they bother my Tyranosaurus Rex-ish arms.  I'll stick to fronts and backs.

There are a few places in my ghetto little town that already have random telephone poles laying around...I wonder how easy it would be to jack/use them.  You see I am also a bit of "Equipment Pirate" in that if I see something that I can use I will generally use/take it if no one claims it.

In this case I would just leave these poles in the fields they are in and train with them until the cops are called because "some meth crazed behemoth is attempting to put a hole in the Earth!"(something I have actually heard someone say!)

Zerchers are good.

Actual telephone poles will probably be way too heavy.

Yes a Telephone pole probably would be awfully heavy...but you are talking to the King Of DIY crap!  I just need to figure this one out.  I like MAt$o idea...I had contemplated putting boards together like that, but I don't have all the proper tools(sanders etc...).  I have also heard of using great big PVC conduits for the training of the balance...and I am a sucker for concrete so I'm sure I could figure something out.  You should see my gym...it's kinda a big deal.  HAHAHA!

I don't think PVC and concrete will hold up.  Try using a long 4x4 or 6x6 with the corners tapered up a couple of feet.  You should be able to take the corners off with basic hand tools.

make 'em like matt shows...i've made mine like that for years and they'll last a few seasons if you paint them heavy and use lots  of screws...  i usually get 3 seasons out of a caber.  use a plane and a rasp to shape the end, only takes 3 or 4 minutes and you're there.

Will a nail file, a flat head screw driver, and a hammer work?  HAHAHAH!  That's about where I'm at on my "tools" stage of my adult hood.  When my house was remodeled I had to use a steak knife to cut extra space in my counter top...

BUt I agree that Mat$0's method seems the most likely to last and will have flexibility as well.

Projects are a reason for getting more tools.  (<---adult rule #2)
---------
I have very few social interaction skills, so I just throw stuff instead.
