Wednesday June 28th 2012

Last big throw workout before Ontario championships this weekend. Went through the gamut of events that we'll be doing this in Embro. 3 throws in each, mock competition style

17.3# Open Stone - 49'8"
LWFD - 70'6"
HH - 98'
Caber - 11:45, 12:15, 11:30
WOB - 14'6"

Pretty happy with today for practice numbers. Not a ton of zip on everything but that should come with a little rest and some adrenaline.

Tomorrow off, and some fine tuning Friday...

Ontario Heavy Events Championship (Embro, ON):

Felt awesome - Took 1st in the overall wth some PRs and 4 field records.

30lb Braemar - 36'8". New field record
17.3lb Open - 53'8". Huge PR. New field record. Had a foul at 55'1"
LWFD - 72'9". Slight PR, New field record. Still one turn only. Continue to work on two turns...
HH - 107'8" - Huge PR by over 7'. Added almost 20' to my HH this year. New Field Record
Caber - 10:00 with a 21'6", yet to be weighed caber. One of the bigger sticks I've turned
WFH - 14'. Pretty standard, ran out of gas at 15'

Overall a great day with great guys on the field. Excellent time had by all at a great show put on Sean Borland and crew.

Dude those are incredible numbers!  You are coming on strong this season!  Awesome Stones and Hammers.....and I cant beleive you are one spinning it out over 70' LWFD!  Thats nuts....Really wish Peterbourgh was happeneing to get the chance to throw with you again this year before you go pro.  Hey atleast if you come to Vic next year you can stay in a nice comfy hotel instead of my kids bed!LOL.  Congrats on being Ontario Champ!

Dude, sick, sick numbers.  Congrats.  Should be a great pro season for you next year.  Your stones should be some of the tops in Canada and your other events are not too far off the top guys.

BTW, I changed my mind...I DON'T want you to try to make it our to Maine this year.  Wink

Adam - I wish Peterborough was happening too man. Hopefully I can get out to Vic again next year. And I have to say, that bed was probably more comfortable to any hotel bed I've stayed in! haha

Rob - Thanks man. When are those games again?? I know you told me before and I wrote it down somewhere...My schedule has changed significantly since the last time we talked.

Wow almost bumped to page 3 of the training logs. Guess I should stop being lazy filling this thing out.
Today was an early morning stone workout..

23 # Braemar
5 x Release Drills
5 x Warmup Throws
5 x Non-Reverse
5 x Full Reverse - Best of about 40'. Par for the course

18.3# Open Stone
3 x Full Reverse Stands
3 x Warmup South Africans
5 x MSA Best of 50'. About as far as I ever throw this stone.

Everything felt right about what it should feel like right now. Getting ready for the Uxbridge games this weekend. Weights tomorrow morning.

Good LWFD practice today with a lot of reps.
5 x stands
10 x one turns
10 x two-turns.

Everything felt pretty crisp and fast. For once, my worst two-turn was better than my best one-turn. Only stopped throwing because I noticed some blood coming through my glove.

Hammer tomorrow...

Had a great time at the Bob Whitman Heavy Events in Uxbridge, ON yesterday.
Long hot day throwing uphill, and I didn't really have the zip I was feeling in Embro. Numbers weren't quite where I want them to be, but I took 1st in the overall and had a great time.

Here are the #s (from memory)

17.2# OS -51'
HW - 34' (One turn. Fouled both of my two turns. One was far)
LW - 70'
HH - 96
LH - 115
Sheaf - 26(?) Can't remember. Finished 3rd, still suck at sheaf
WOB - 14'. Made 14' easily on my first pull, no one else cleared 13' so that was the end.
Caber - 21'10". 12:00, 12:00, 12:00 for the win. This was probably the highlight of the day.

Day off today, back to training tomorrow.

Wednesday August 1st 2012
Great day with the stones. My next three games (Hungary, Latvia, Minnesota) all contest Braemar stone, so I figured I would start training it  a bit more intensely

23.5 # Braemar -
10 x Warmup Releases
5 x Warmup Throws
6 x Non-Reverse
6 x Full Reverse
Last 6 throws were well over the 40' marker I put out.

17.2# Open Stone -
3 x Full Reverse Stands
3 x Warmup MSA
6 x Full MSA

I really figured something out in the MSA today. Open stone felt horrible in Uxbridge so I decided to evaluate some of the things I was doing wrong. One quick fix and I immediately was adding 4-5' to all my throws, and staying nice and balanced, eliminating any fouls.
Last 4 throws were as follows (No fouls): 53', 54', 54', 54'6, 55'6

Now I need to find the same breakthrough in weights...
55'6 would be a lifetime PR, and was about 10' farther than my stand.

Not as much zip today as yesterday, but technically felt pretty good.

LWFD -
5 x stands
5 x one turns
10 x two turns

Didn't measure but they were out over 70', which is fine for practice

HH -
3 x one wind
3 x two wind
3 x three wind

Started to get the feeling of catching it back on the right side by the end of the session, back out over 100'.
All around a pretty good practice.

Saturday Aug 4th 2012
Had a good long practice in the heat today. Did a full LH hammer practice and a competition style braemar/open stone practice.

LH - 17#
5 x one wind - best of 105'
5 x two wind - best of 112'
5 x three wind - best of 120'.

I think this is the first time I've thrown that hammer 120'...Not consistent yet but I hit a big one once every few throws.

Braemar - 23.5#
3 x NR
5 x Full Throws - Best of 42'. Practice PR with this stone. Felt good

Open Stone - 17#
3 x stands - Best of 46'6"
5 x MSA - Best of 54'6"

Stones are still flying well. Time to get the weights nailed down this week before I head off to Europe.

Sunday August 12th 2012
Heading to Europe on Wednesday to compete in the strength challenge event in Hungary. We are throwing braemar, and 'Hungarian Hammer' (a 28 lb hammer on an iron rod with an olympic hammer handle; no boots allowed). We will also throw caber, LWFD, WOB, and some strongman events.

Best I could do to train for this was throw heavy hammer without blades...

23.5# Braemar -
5 x release drills
5 x warmup throws
5 x NR
5 x Full Reverse. Best of 42'. Big throw for me with this stone

HH - No Blades
3 x one wind
10 x three wind

Had to widen out the stance and adjust a bit, was out into the 90'+ range by the end of it. Best of around 95'.

Probably get in one more session before I leave.

Back from the IHGF Highland Strength Championships in Hungary.
This event is half heavy events, half strongman. I've never done a lick of strongman, nor trained for it, so that part was...well, interesting to say the least.

Had a great time - We had VIP treatment by organizer Adam Darasz.

Throwing was OK. Tweaked my hamstring in the very first event, but decided just to wrap it tight and hope for the best... Quick event breakdown:

26.5# Braemar - 37'+ for the win and new Euro Record (for Highland Strength)

Mill stone press - 0 reps. Tied with about 3/4 of the field. Was able to lift, lap, and get this big flat stone to my chest, but unable to press it out.

Caber - Struggled here. Stick was heavy and about 12" wide at the bottom. Couldn't get a good handle on it. Finished middle of the pack

Atlas stone carry - My first time touching an atlas stone in my life was in competition. I think the stone was around 275# or so. Was able to lift it, lap it, and carry for about half of the course before dropping the stone. Hamstring was fried at this point, didn't try to pick it back up and finish

WOB - clean through to 15', and then missed. We take all three attempts at once so it is a bit tougher than the heavy events style. Finished 4th

Hammer - Hungarian Hammer is about 29# with an olympic style handle, and an iron rod in place of a normal handle. No blades allowed, made it tough to throw this big thing. Finished 3rd I believe.

Lifting Medley - Loading the mill stone, atlas stone, anvil, and a concrete filled barrel for time. No problems with the mill stone and atlast stone, wasn't able to squat low enough to get a good handle on the anvil (hamstring problem again). Finished DFL in this event

WFD - Not sure what weight it was, seemed heavier than a 28. Took the win here

Manhood stones - 275# or 330# atlas stones loaded for reps. Finished with a few reps of the 275# before shutting down for the day. Was not DFL at least.

Overall 5th out of 11 guys. Not bad considering I was clueless going into the strongman events.

Hamstring needs a little rest, then time to gear up for Minnesota. Two games to go...

Back from the Am Worlds at the Mn Ren Fest.
Awesome show put on by Kevin, Lenny, Jeff, Colin and the rest. Treated great all weekend, met a bunch of great guys.

I just wish throwing went the same way. Had some zip in the morning, which quickly ran out after about 3 events. Not sure why I'm void of energy lately, but I'm thinking all the travel (33 flights in 2012 thus far, including 11 in the last 3 weeks) might have something to do with it. Something to keep in mind for next season.

23.5# Braemar - 40'. Par for the course
16.5# Open - 51'9". 3 throws over 51', consistent but not enough zip for a big one
HWFD - 35'+ - Par for the course, 1 spin
LWFD - 67'10.5". Felt fine, went nowhere.
Caber - 12:00 on the 19' 115 qualifier, then struggled with the 16'8'' 140. Should turn that stick, but two bad picks led to only one real crack at it, and I pulled late.
HH - Disaster. Boot pulled out and almost wiped out on rd 1, rd 2 hit the ground, rd 3 fell forward. 88'? Only 19' off my PR.
WOB - 14'. Par for the course. One good pull at 15'.

Overall 5th.
Two games left this season.

Mike,  It was great meeting you and throwing with you this weekend.  Look forward to watching your progress over the next year and hopefully sharing the field with you at some point in the future.
