Jon Irvin (Oklahoma City) has calves for forearms, and I agree with Rob,  He can cold form steel with his grip, but when he is throwing in competition...  He Hooks.  It is a great way to have nice loose arms when throwing and a sure hold on the implement.  Who cares about a dark line under your thumbnail???

Quint and I both had major grip problems... even when hooking. I could hang on to any throw of the 56# that was 40 or less. But when I decided to turn it up, I would ALWAYS blow my grip... So we made an effort to have two, big time, grip days a week during, and after, our Core training...  Did a lot of single hand deads, snatches, plate and bumper holds (and snatches), and rolling thunder stuff. We would use both regular and hook grips for all but the rolling thunder stuff. Some said that we were spinning our wheels, but we can both attest that our grip has never felt better. Of course the deadlift stuff will always help, but it does good to spend some time with single hand lifts.... but What the hell do I know.

Two things....

I personally keep a griipper in the car. It's not a COC it's just the strongest gripper I could get at Big five sports.  When the car is at a stoplight, I grab the gripper and hold it shut for a twenty count. Then swap hands. I can get in three holds before the light changes.

Secondly, if you have a pretty strong grip, and you are pulling the weights out of your hand during throws, I suspect you might be working against the weight, and pulling it out of it's natural trajectory.  If you do that, it won't go as far.  I am no throwing beast, but I have a so-so grip, and the only times I lose a weight is when I'm throwing wrong, and fighting the weight.

I lost the weight for the first time in a long time today, lol.. I didn't spray tack my thumb before taping it and as I was putting some heat on the HWFD right when landing the 2nd spin the tape pulled right off, haha..

Def. a good tip. If you don't keep them down they'll rip
off easier, and that's no fun.
Also, DL is great for getting the hands to toughen up.
If you are wanting to throw more than your hands will allow
I would suggest throwing until they hurt, then taping or
using gloves for the rest of your throwing session. You'll
get good work in for your throws and hands both.

Spence, your grip will be much improved if you put the beer down or at least switch it to your off hand.
