So I've been workin out periodically at the Westbrook, Tx high school (6-man school prolly 70 kids 9th-12th) I noticed that they had their offseason testing results posted on a board so i figured i'd see how they were lookin and as a shock to me i found that they tested 4 lifts- Bench, Squat, Deadlift, and...wait for it curls??? seriously WTF? I also noticed that their top lifter had a bench max of 205, squat of 320 and dead of 360, yet this tiny school had 8- 100lbs plates in their weight room? it doesn't make any sense to me i just thought i'd share

Ah, the curl test.  The truest of all athletic barometers.

As for the 100lb plates, if there is a leg press in there, it makes perfect sense.

For the plates... just be happy they have equipment.  Maybe they got a deal... someone donated etc.  working at a college I would not turn away donated plates etc.

As for the testing.  sometimes there is a point to testing things just because the kids think they are important.  People have face validity with many tests and think they are measures that are important.  If you can use that to get kids to train hard and get them to do the other vital things done.  Then you have made progress.

With todays kids more then ever we have to put on dog and pony shows to gain their interest.  anything that gets them lifting is good.  Just be happy there in the weight room..... gain their interest and then show them the right way.

Had it been Lubbock I'd have said they needed the extra ballast to keep the gym from blowing away. But not in East Texas.

My mistake, there's a Westbrook north of Tyler. But if yours is near Abilene then maybe they are using the 100s to hold the gym down.
