Have put in my first off season throwing.All the throws have increased but have noticed that the past few weeks I seem to not be hitting a PR on anything. I am however able to throw ever increased numbers of throws to this basic distance.Example:put three feet on the HWFD over last years best and now am throwing it seven or eight times each practice but no further.
The throws are done with less effort and the technique feels solid.The volume does not wreck me.Throwing injuries and aches are a thing of the past.Strength levels are up and diet is solid.
My question is am I building towards something or missing the boat?Have I reached as far as my current technique will allow? Can't get credit for what I can throw seven times in a row!!!

It appears that something needs to change if you are stuck and want to throw farther.

I remember throwing discus and shotput, and being the same way. I would throw the same again and again and again, then I'd bust a 10' PR and throw consistantly around that level. It's like my body remembered what it took to throw better.

It's unlikely that you will hit PRs all the time, and you don't necessarily have to.  Many throwers use what's known as range throwing in their daily sessions.  Generally you throw at about 80% intensity for 90%-95% of your throws, adding in 1 or 2 max throws per session.

As you pointed out, the throws can be executed with a relaxed solid form.  Over time, this translates into big throws as max levels.

It is very rare that I PR at practice.  I just try to consistently beat a particular distance while working on my robust number of technical flaws.  Work more on position and don't worry about breaking records in practice.  For me, games provide the hype and fun conducive to big throws. 

The only down side to huge throws is figuring out how the hell you threw that far!!!

So I guess my problem is that I have been working on throwing further rather than getting efficient technique?The technical improvement and skill will allow me to PR at games(sometimes) when it counts.
Guess that why people call it practice.Thanks people, for perspective and guidance.

as far as I did in practice!!!"

last year it changed for some reason and I threw much farther during
games than in practice. hopefully trend continues.

What is your feeling?
Is the idea that we do better getting up for games or that to throw far you have to relax and be smooth?

I try not to worry about PR's all the time but averages with my group of throws.I try to get good averages when i practice that way i don't stress out about getting PR's all the time.

I guess during practice I changed from measuring how far I was throwing
to feeling good while throwing. Then when game time comes I felt
confident and let the rage hit me. Love me some ragenberry crunch.

Back when I was throwing...

I practice one or two events a session and work towards a high number of complete, technically sound throws.  What I have discovered in a relatively short amount of time, as most folks on this board already have:  More often than not, the most consistent athlete carries the day.  To that end, I set a tire, flag, cup, whatever, at a given distance...occasionally I paint a circle in the grass, and practice just dropping the implement into that tire or into that circle.  Over and over again.  Nice and smooth, plenty of rest between throws. 

For example, I know I can go 100 in the LH just about any day of the week.  No big deal.  So, I will set a circle at 100, then another 100 from that, and another 100 from that.  My training partners and I have 4 or 5 LH's between us, so I will scoop 'em all up, throw 5, then walk down and get them, stand in the first circle or close to it and throw them into the next one.  I get high volume and a great opportunity to polish the finer aspects of the throw...hips, heel-toe, low points, etc.  How perfect can my form be?  How easy can I make the rep?  The idea is not to drop serious bombs in practice, but to get the rust off and get a good feel for the event.

This is where the consistent athlete part comes into play...once I am good for 100 in the LH every time without too much hassle, I will move the circle to 105.  Or 110.  Whatever.  PR's are great, but consistency counts.  Maybe I'll go to a Game, have a bowl of TRob's RageBerry Crunch (Or my favorite, Count Crunkula!) and do something obscene with the hammers or weights.  Maybe not.  Maybe my practice PR's are about where the record stops...but again, I know this going in.  I expect nothing less than those numbers, and when I go a little longer, well, that is just cool too.  Never count on PR's at a Game.  Adrenaline doesn't count for much...neither do bagpipes.  Play like you practice.
