I was wondering if any of you physics type guys could tell me how much it would effect the distances on my light hammer when my trainin hammer weighs 17# on the dot but its a steel bar with 2 5# weights. so the weight is distibuted all throughout the implement not just at the head. My PR in the light hammer is 102' with this hammer i was throwin 91ish? any thoughts?

It would be pretty easy to calculate the difference in angular momentum between the two hammers for a given head velocity, at least if you were a calculus whiz but then figuring out how far it would go...well, it depends on other things, like for example, the angle of release.

For simplicity, I think you have to assume the same angle of release for both hammers and no air drag.  Thus the difference in distance is a ratio of the velocity of the CG at release. The big difference is the radius of the CG (how far the CG is from your center of rotation).  I don't know if you can assume equal head velocity, because  of the variation in weight and rotational moment of inertia. 

The best correlations I have done involved equal energy being input in to the implements.  This should provide a reasonable "knock down" for the practice implement.
