I've always been interested in competing in Highland games, but I never knew where to start. Then--for the last several years--I was dealing with a health issue that prevented me from doing giving it a try.

This morning I met up with Duncan McCallum and some other Dallas/Ft. Worth area throwers.

I had a blast!

I am very fortunate to have met such a great group that offered great pointers and humorous feedback when I botched things.

I have a long way to go, but with Duncan and everybody in our area, I can only get better.

Thanks, guys!

Christopher

Looking forward to tomorrow's practice.

I'm not sure I'll be able to make Sunday's practice (plans tomorrow evening),  but I hope to make Sunday, too.

Great to meet you and Cynthia today. This is a great group to practice with, and Duncan is a great instructor of the games, as well as a fantastic thrower. Yea.....I'm biased cause I practice with him, and he has taught me a lot......but his actions speak louder than any words can say!

See ya next week at practice!

Hi Cynthia,

Ya know, if you decide you want to throw, we'll be there to help out and get ya started. We always need more women who would enjoy throwing with us! If not, we love the support and the company!

See ya at Saturday

Actually, I'm going to give it a try this weekend.  I'm sure it will be a painful reminder of just how out of shape I am since I haven't lifted a weight in a long time or done much more than my evening walks for fitness.  D'oh!! :)  Gotta start somewhere though, eh?

I'm not sure which day we'll get out there or if we'll do both days again.  I need to see what our schedule looks like and see how Christopher is feeling.  I'm sure we'll be out there sometime, though!

See ya soon!

You're soooooo stingy with letting people throw things and your advice is non-existent! Yes, Duncan--you suck!

Dunno why you'd say you suck.  In the few weeks I've been throwing, you and everybody else in the group have been incredibly kind, and even though many of you have been throwing a while, I've seen improvement in everybody in the short time I've been throwing.

Your pointers have given me a lot of confidence as I bounce back from an illness that sapped all my strength, and having such a great group of people to throw with is addicting.

Nobody sucks--everybody is beyond cool!

Looking forward to tomorrow...

Yeah, what Christopher said!

Thanks so much, everyone!  I've really enjoyed myself, and once I got over my "ohgeezdon'tlookatmeI'mgonnamakeafoolofmyself" shyness and started getting into it, I REALLY had a blast!  Everyone has been so nice and incredibly helpful :D

Looking forward to tomorrow!

And if that kind of meal is what fuels Scott "The Big Unit" Watts, I will have to add it to my training regimen.

Do both.  Being very strong, and very slow = Fail

Being very fast, and not strong = Better

The goal is to be strong and explosive.  Deads make you strong, cleans give you pop.

Do both!!!

ok this guy at the gym , who use to compete in strong man stuff , said deads for strong , he said it is good that i can do 300 on hach squat(i dont know) then my old boss use to throw in college and was a strength coach in football said power clean for explosion of power , to learn the release of power , it translates to throwing

Do both...it really is not a one or the other thing.  I guess you could do an explosive deadlift, i.e. use a weight so light it does not challenge you.  Then you just grip it and rip it.

You might split the difference and do power cleans...kinda the best of both worlds...

Do what makes you comfortable, but understand that the dynamics of strongman type lifting versus explosive throw lifting...

Examine some of the Pro's or strong Am's; many of these folks are NOT hulking iron monsters.  Better yet, look at Mindy P.  She is CRAZY explosive...that is what you have to be!
