Oh now I get it !!!!

So I have been doing this Highland game thing for about a year now and the WFD has been kicking my A**! So last night after walking the dog I decided to take a couple throw before I put the weights away. I warmed up with a tire then with the 28 I decided to try to spin as SSSLOOOOW as possible for 2 turns and then release. WOW on my second try I threw a PR …..with sandals on, I think before I was getting too far ahead of the weight when I went fast. I tell ya it was like a Yen thing I tried to explain it to my wife and she said “That’s nice did you take out the trash!” I feel like the planets are in line and all she cares about is the trash. Now if I could do the same with hammer!!!

Yeah, well, that's to be expected.  Now comes the hard part:  figuring out what you were REALLY doing when you threw in the sandals.

I had that recently, that moment when the technique just kind of clicked and the weight flew about 12' farther than my previous pr.  And it felt like I barely even put any effort into it.

Ahhhh.

Not to be off topic, but I just don't think the man's foot should be on display.  It is utilitarian, not for fashion.  Certainly a sandal is off limits with a sock or not.  Put a shoe on that thing man.  Sorry.

Went out last night with the 56 I actually was able to hit all foot work perfectly I didn’t measure any of the throws but I got all my steps in perfect. I pulled hard then let the weight get out ahead turn under fast pull again turn under and set up for release!.......................and yes Myles I did have shoes on!!.........10 throws I think my right arm is 3 inches longer than the other now!

It's really a great feeling when something clicks like that...I had a similar thing when I came to the realization that I was just kind of spinning and letting go of the wfd...then when I actually pulled it flew an extra 3 or 4 feet.  DUHH...you mean you have to THROW IT?  Oh, well...that's different!

Anyway...good job g-man

Only problem with training the 56 for an hour at a time is my right hand is starting to fall apart. Time to breakout the tape!

I went out this weekend and could not locate my 28, which is what I usually use to train the WFD, which has been my weak event as of late.  So I resorted to the 42 and 56 (I'm a masters thrower).  I think my problem (besides being crazy enough to do this sport in the first place) was I was strong enough I could "sling" the 28 with upper body strength ingnoring any semblance of technique.  However, the 42 slowed me down, I usually don't train it at all, saving my shoulder for the contests, and forced me into good technique!  Plant, sink, and LIFT!  My PR on my 42 was 40'1", and I got 42 feet even with a half dozen throws over 40.  I then his 31'6" on my 56, three over 30ft and all six throws over my previous PR of 28' 10".  So, a stupid thing like misplacing my 28 (which I found right after my workout) created a situation that led to leap in my throwing.

Ah ha, form and function.  I remember having a discussion with Simon Stewart - 2002 Amatuer A National Champion 44 ft. 56 WFD, 80+ ft. 28 WFD  and U of I Shot and Hammer - about the Weight For Distance.  He pointed out that a lot of amatuers try to hard and attempt to build up to much speed at the beginning of the throw.

He recommended performing the initial reverse slowly.  All you are trying to do is set up for the second step.  At this point you can apply speed, with the idea that your hips are ahead of the weight, but not at the expense of form.  You can have a wonderful entry at speed, but if you cannot achieve a proper power position prior to the throw, then it was all for not.  Learn position before getting fast, then get fast.

This is exactly how it clicked for me.  I spent a few months concentrating on making the first turn as slow as possible without letting the weight fall, then applying all my strength into the second turn, then throw it.  Then I started to apply speed in the first turn.  The positions and form was locked in, so I set PR's in four consecutive Games adding a total of 7ft to my light wfd.  Now, I'm working on the next key...pushing the weight instead of pulling.

Good luck.

I’m finding that working the 56 is helping my 28. You can't throw the 56 with just muscle alone like the 28.

I have found myself in the same boat as the rest of you. I never had a good WFD. And then one day the Light goes 8' further and then the 56 goes 10'. I was just standing there with mouth wide open wondering where they came from.

Only problem was that the longer I threw the 56 dist. dropped from by about 1' per 2 throws. I can't keep it up for long!!!

Terry,

Not supposed to get a lot of throws in with the 56#.  5 is all for me before moving to the 28# and about 15 there.

In fact, some days I train with the 42# so that I can also focus on form with a heavier weight.

I've only thrown in 2 games, but my 56 went from 18 to 22 plus and my 28 went from 44 to 49.  I am hoping for more in KC.  We'll see what we can do there.

By the way, looking forward to meeting you.

Ed

Edward,

I'm looking forward to meeting you too. I already have my reservations at the Comfort Inn!

After I was throwing the other day I decided to weigh my 28 and 56!!!The 28 was really 34 and the 56 was 60!! Its no wonder my right arm drags the ground!!

Yeesh!  That will NOT help you in competition.  If anything, your training weights should be 5-10% light.

Good point.  We have light implements here that we throw at the end of practice.  Helps alot with increasing your speed, and not just in practice.

Wayne,

I did lighten them up a bit. I just never thought that those plates could be off that much! They are now 28 and 56 on the nose.
