Yesterday was my 3rd day of practicing throwing...I would appreciate any and all comments about how to improve in any capacity. Right now my coach has me doing one turn for the LWFD and using the wire hammer for practicing for my Hammer Throw...
Here are two vids of my practice yesterday... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcbBoleUFQE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJS3CrNrWZ8 With Respect, James Bullock |

I would say you are ready to go right to two turns with the weight for
distance. Remember to start the first spin at around 3/4 intensity and then really sprint through the 2nd turn. Also - try to release the weight with your chest pointing higher toward the sky. I would suggest stopping practicing the hammer with the wire hammer. It has all together a different feel to it than the scottish hammer. You can probably make a cheap scottish hammer with a piece of PVC, some cement and a coffee can or just buy one for under 100 bucks. the hammer really has to be figured out through practice and watching video of others throwing the hammer. You have the basic feel of the release down pretty well. Your winds are way too slow and you aren't reaching back behind your head with the hammer enough - but keep in mind that top hammer throwers wear metal blades off the front of their shoes which allows for a technique that isn't possible without the blades - depending on how serious you want to get with the sport, you may want to start using the blades right away. you can get a pair at brockthrow.com I would start watching scottish hammer throwing on video and you should see it its different from your throws. good luck |

Thank you very much for the comments.... I am going to get the DVDs very soon.
I will not be using the wire hammer any longer to throw with. Will also look into getting some blades. I really would like to go as far as I can in the sport... Thanks again... With Respect, James Bullock |

James, Of course you want to go far in the sport...everyone does! Technique stuff...and I am no master technician... Video 1 - LWFD At 16 seconds into your video, it almost appears like you are slinging the weight. I can take one look at you and tell that you know where the weight room is, so there is no reason you should be slinging. Notice how you move backwards, away from the weight, as you release? This is indicative of two things...either you are very much off balance, which might be part of the issue, or, that you are overcompensating the throw with your chest, shoulder, and bicep. Watch some of video of the Pros, and J. Irvin (Deakion) if you can find them; they cross the box aggressively, and when they release, the release angle is high. The release angle is high, because they are throwing the weight from the waist down. They are in what is called the "reverse C" position; any shot/discus coach worth their Bill Walton track shorts can show you this, and it will make ALL the difference. Your foot position is not bad at all, but the step leading to it is more like a hop than anything else; this is a linear event, with thr thrower moving along a set line. If you jump, or hop, up in the air, you have taken away most, if not all, of your power...unless your name is Frasure or McKim and you are just a freak of nature...and then you can get away with it! Here is a link to an Irvin video...I am warning you...he is not an attractive man... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkJ9Q_CvfmQ&feature=relat ed
Video 2 - Hammer Wire hammer = "I will get owned at a HGames." Why? Because the dynamics and grips are not the same. Mr. Barron is right on the money...it is good to get the feel of the motion, but the differences between a wire hammer and a regular hammer are so pronounced as to make it more detrimental to your training than anything. Get a regular hammer and practice single wind releases. Once you can do that, move to two winds, then three, if you want. Is hard for me to offer anything else without seeing a real hammer in your hands. Other than that, keep it going. You have the physical ability, which is the hard part. Everything else you can learn! Congratulations on taking the first step man, and keep training hard! Respectfully, Duncan McCallum |

Irvin is a good one to watch. I have a love/hate relationship with him. I love watching his videos, because they are easy to follow. I hate him because he lives in Oklahoma and now I have to throw AGAINST him! Keep hitting the weights James, and be patient. Big tall guy like you...you'll be like a fish in water in no time!!! |
