This might be a basic question but In the hammer are you pulling down and up on every rotation to build up speed .... slow to fast or is it something totally different? Buck

I accelerate the hammer as it falls, trying to keep the low point as far to the right as possible. I find trying to accelerate as the hammer climbs throws the orbit of the ball out of whack. But that's just me. |

Doug (Kressley?) at the Kirksville Games gave me some good tips on the hammer and I didn't realize that it was even possible to do the things he talked about. Like control where the ball's lowest point is (over the right foot, etc) on each successive swing. I had no idea how technical the event was until watching him and a few of the other A guys throwing. And of course seeing the pros throw was an eye-opener too. I was throwing myself off balance every wind because I was trying to accelerate the ball the entire time, not just on the upswing. Coupled with the more obvious form errors that plague most beginners - T-Rex arms, etc - I have a lot to correct that will net me a bunch of distance in the long run.

i used to accellerate on the downswing until an oly hammer coach told me to accellerate on the up.. my first throw I hit a 3ft training PR of 90' on the heavy hammer w/no blades.. now I pull hard on the upswing of each successsive orbit.. I don't worry about the first orbit so much as hitting the 2 o'clock position on the down swing, then i pull, hit 1 o'oclock on the down, pull again, hit 12 o'clock on the down then give it everything I've got. In order for this to work you've got to get really wide on your first orbit then stay extremely long and tall for each one thereafter. I've finally got some blades so I'm going to be working those for the next 4 weeks getting ready for the Tucson games and my second A competition.. |

I'm trying hard not to pull at all. Zero.
I'm **Trying**...to have my arms and shoulders completely relaxed after the first wind, and have all the crank come from my hips ramming back and forth. |
