Grey schedule 40 PVC pipe in either 1/2 or 3/4 diam with a flare on one end.  Can usually be found at Home Depot, Lowes or an electrical supply.  Cheap and holds up pretty well, though I imagine the cold could shorten the life span.

We've use pvc and rattan for comp. but they break fairly easy. And we only get maybe 20-30 throws with them ..  I started using some pipe made of HDPE ,, you have to have a flair fussed on the end ,, but we've made 1--'s + with very little problems ,

You can even bend this stuff in half and it comes back to shape ! But it's very good for pratice ,, tons of throwing before you can tear it up !!

I used to think sch 80 PVC was the way to go... used sch 40 for a long time and didn't see a real difference - have even used 3/4" black steel pipe as a handle.

Prior to last year, I had been using PVC and had about 5 years on my heavy hammer before it broke... light hammer would break about once/year.  When they broke this last year I went rattan and haven't had a break.  Some rattan breaks easier than others - and it's getting harder to find good wood.  In my next of the woods, PVC sch 40 is the cheapest way to go... use 1/2" stock for a realy whippy feel (although it makes my hammer an ounce light), and use 3/4" when I don't mind having to shave it a little to make it fit.

I have only made a heavy hammer.  Used 4 5lb plates and a 2 1/2lb plate slid over the handle and duct taped well so they don't clang or slide off when the hammer hits.

I bought a 45lbs dumbell and a 35lbs dumbell , cut off the handles and drilled  out the weight to match the pipe . Then you have 2 hammers ea. weight for the price of one . It might not be exact weight +/- but , it's for practice ! I have used mine for about 6 yrs now with no problems . You end up with 2 ea. 22lbs heads and 2 ea. 16lbs heads !!

I own a hammer that is designed for 1/2" schedule 40/80 PVC handle.  I consistently throw this hammer farther than I do 3/4" PVC or rattan handled hammers.

I can hold my 1/2" PVC hammer with the handle parallel to the floor and the head sags over 30" (a bit less when using the stiffer schedule 80).

I love the feel of the 1/2 hammer.  With that said, I object to the use of 1/2" Schedule 40/80 handles in competition.  I believe they are too whippy and I believe they give a mechanical advantage over rattan (the preferred handle in rules) or 3/4 PVC handles.

Others disagree with this conjecture saying that the flexibility of the handle could not possibly help the thrower.  Some point out that you need to be concerned with the weight when switching from Rattan to PVC.

A discussion of this occurred in the thread:

http://www.nasgaweb.com/forums/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=238 0&PN=1

I believe PVC came about because of cost and speed in which one can change a flared PVC handle over other forms of handles.  I doubt anybody gave much thought to how the handle effects throwing.  When or if the rules were changed, they were changed to say that Rattan is preferred.

my 2 cents

Thanks again guys ,

Like I mentioned earlier , we are practicing with pipe made from HDPE ( hi density poly ethlelene ) ---- talk about flexible -- you can bend this stuff in half and it comes back to shape . We just keep breaking the pvc handles . The only down side is that you have to have someone with the right equipment fuss a swaged end on ,, but after that you're good to go for years !  It sure has that whippy action you talk about .

I'm liking the 80 schedule PVC conduit.  The downside is that they're sold in 10' sections, and there's only 1 flare per length.  Does anyone have any suggestions for flaring PVC so I can cut down on waste?

In the following thread

http://www.nasgaweb.com/forums/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=234 7

the following was posted:

find something that fits into the flared end of the pvc, in my case it is a screw driver handle, flares it out to just the right size. turn you stove(i have only done this with electric, if you have a gas stove you gotta figure it out) to high and slowly rotate one end of the pvc over the burner. i found out one day grey pvc is completely setable with heat.

once you got enough heat into it, it will be all soft and squishy, jam what ever you found that is the right size into the tube approx. the length of the required flare and let partially cool, not too long as you will not get your flareorizer out and et voila , you are the proud parent of a brand new baby flare.

if you get your flare tool stuck, just heat the pvc up again and it will come out. works well, doing it for years and never has a flare let go.

Dennis,

Heating PVC on the stove is a bad idea. The gas that's given off is quite toxic. Here's another option from Tony Dziepak's page

"To flare an unflared pipe section, saw a straight 3" cut through the pipe lengthwise. Cut a 2" long end off a wooden broom handle with a 7/8" handle (kitchen broom or mop; a rounded end works well). The broom end should flare the pipe slightly when inserted. "

One other option is to buy a pvc coupling and cut it in half and glue it on the cut off piece ,, might have to shave it down a little like a wedge to fit -- but it's an option

If the handle keeps breaking or the hammer won't go far, it might be a bad hammer.  I have thrown two of those away.

If the PVC hasn't been softened, wouldn't this more likely lead to an unstable split instead of a flare?

It might, but heating PVC anywhere without a chem hood is a bad idea.

C'mon Jeff, do you really think you're more of an authority on this than the leprechaun that helps me when I do this in an unventilated closet?  Mr. O'Happy says it's fine, but unlike you, he holds a degree in pipeology.

Very well. Just don't blame me if you end up like a guy I went to high school with. He made bongs out of PVC and still lives in his parents basement.

Great hammer handles can be made by fusing together the femure bones of the competitors you crush. Mine is made from Dave Carl, Jody and Cameron.

If you're using Dave's femure, I can see why you'd need a couple of other ppl to get a good handle.  Those little chicken legs of his don't leave you much to work with.

And if you throw it away far enuf', does it then become a "good hammer?"

Seriously, make sure that hole in the head has been beveled!  A "nice" square edge will cut and thereby weaken handles, rattan or PVC!!
