Your just not getting all the open stone? as of late I've been creepin off the plateau I've been at for better part of a year just not real happy maybe it's due to form. Ok as best as this can be here goes:
When coming into the spin and landing with right foot (RH thrower) do some of you instantly spring off the right foot into the put or do you land and coil like a Braemar then go into the put ? is your body in a good straight line ie..head over shoulders, shoulders over waist that line or does your head lead and lower body follow? Do you coil the chin over the right shoulder instead of leaving it chin over chest, then uncoiling after blowing the left arm out during the put. Im intested in reading others input. Video if you got it. |

Since Don Stewart doesn't post here, this sounds like a good time for
Dave Cheney to chime in. He's recently had spin-putt lessons from
Don Stewart, and it's been like night and day for him.

I am no expert in this, so please stone masters, let me know if any of this
is bad advice...
I coil up as much as possible. Your muscles lengthened when you planted right foot and then left foot - you need to "reset" them (especially the legs) and also generate as much torque with your hips/core as possible to unload on the stone for the longest amount of time.
You want to generate as much torque as possible - while maintaining balance over your feet. So, your body is now twisted, but still center of gravity is mostly now over your back (right) foot. The first thing to drive is your feet, as they twist forward, then your knees, hips, chest - definitely uncoil from bottom to top. The last thing which should come through is the stone. Thrust your left arm UP! Chest big and then right before you shoot your right hand (with stone) up and out, block hard with your left arm and leg, and pole vault yourself right up and out. Once the stone is released, reverse feet to keep yourself inside the trig. |

Wow someone looking to me for advise I am just learning the spin but have a great coach. The best thing I can offer is the drills that Don gave me. They help big time! 1- if you stand in the box as if you took your first step already (both feet parellel with the trig) and go into your throw from there. Throw from this position over and over working mainly on opening the hip and finishing the throws. ( I hope Im explaining this right) 2- Stand on your left foot right foot raised like a crane kick from Karate kid. Push off your left, land in the power position and throw. This will help with the push of that back leg. ( its hard as hell but it helps) I hope these help. If you send me an email I have video of don going threw the motions. good luck and I hope I described eveything ok. |

It looks to me like you are not staying back with the stone - by the time
you hit the front you are all the way open. You can see it on the 3rd toss (side view) especially. You havent got your left foot on the ground yet, but you are already all the way opened up. What I try to do is find something which is directly behind the trig which is up in the air a bit - a flag or a tree or something (not something on the ground) When you come around after your first drive - find that item with your eyes, and try to keep your eyes on it for as long as possible. Only other thing I would try to do, is keep your back a bit straighter, you are leaning over your feet, which makes you lead with your head and body, rather than your feet and legs. The first thing to move when you start your spin is your right leg/foot, your body should remain in the torqued position. Try not to push on the stone until you have both feet on the ground! I will see if I can find some good video for you, but I know Ryan's site has some good stuff on it. John Gallagher's overhead view video from 2002 is particularily good. http://www.scottishhardcoretraining.com/ |

Hapy,
I believe it is sinking in some, Dave as well, this is what Im going to work on for the next few head, back, feet aligned, not leading with head so much, (but I have a huge head so this might take a while). ![]() but if this is right and you guys think I will help I will do this as well try and lead with the right foot and create torque with lower body (like the full spinning guys that start backwards) I guess like you said Dave stand on left foot and swing right foot/hip around to create whip, ground both feet untorge into throw. |
