I am relatively new to the weightlifting world. I notice some athletes grip the bar with their hands in different directions (one hand in one direction and the other hand gripping in the other direction). Any benefit to one way over the other? I grip with my palms facing towards me or facing in. Sometimes the bar seems to 'roll' as I lift it. I appreciate any suggestions. -Dave |

By having opposing grips,it stops the "roll".However, keeping both hands over the bar,is a great grip exercise.

If you want to lift your heaviest weights (and that's the point in DL,
isn't it?), you should either use an overhand grip and hook your grip
(really, this is only for masochists) or alternate your grip.
If you do alternate your grip, MAKE VERY VERY SURE THAT THE ELBOW OF YOUR UNDERHAND ARM IS STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU PULL. Otherwise, you're just asking for a biceps tendon rupture. -Wayne |

Seriously, if you don't plan on competing in powerlifting and your grip is alright, then use straps for deads.

What Wayne says if definately true. When I first started deadlifting years ago I used an alternate grip. My one arm won't straighten from an injury and when I used it as my underhand arm I must have favored it because of the injury. Well needless to say I screwed up the tendon pretty good. Now I just stick with the overhand grip and alls good. See you this summer Dave. Bill |

Check out http://media.putfile.com/benni for a look at the best deadlifter in the world. I think I am more amazed at his "warmup" with 858 lbs. than the 940 lift. I don't think most of us could lift a broomstick that fast. He did subsequently deadlift 970 lbs at the WPO Worlds and got 1000 lbs. to his knees. He is also scheduled for the Arnold Strongman. Sorry about waxing eloquent on the deadlift but it has a special place in my heart.

What amazes me msot about Benni is his pre lifting routine. If you see the video of the 970 and 1002, he's pretty much robotic, insane guy. He's going to do 1000 very soon. Bench pressing more than deadlifting is just wrong anyway. Bench record is 1005, Squat is 1202, deadlift is 970.

Just realize, He is wearing a suit. What makes the advantage of a suit nowadays is his ability to lower the heaviest of his lifts so slowly. Take another look. Don't get me wrong, he has CRS. |

Just realize a deadlift suit is not even close to what a bench shirt is, or even a squat suit for that matter. That suit is not allowing him to do that Roy. If you think that it is, i suggest you buy one and give it a try. I know someone who can get you a deal on one |

I hear a dl suit adds 20lbs TOPS to the dl. Thats why alot of the big name europeans don't wear them. Andy Bolton pulled 933 with just a belt. Its not like you get 200lbs out of it like a bench shirt

I never used them (suits). I just know it adds a ton to a bench (or so I have heard) I ass...u me d. It would help a deadlift. I'm gonna take your word for it craigor and not go out and buy one.

I have been doing heavy deads, relatively speaking, for the past month and a half. As I have improved and my weights have gone up I now have pain in my right hip. I have full the full range of motion but at the 3/4 squat level the pain level ratchets up and I lose strength. A visit to the chiro takes care of it, its taken care of when they do the side posture work, but I wonder if it is caused by something I'm doing. Any similar experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. |

If you look at the records over the last 10 years(since suits & shirts have exploded)squat records & bench records have been going up at an blistering pace-the only lift of the three powerlifts that hasn't benefited from suits is the deadlift..yes it hekps abit but not as much as you think...have seen videos of him deadlifting 910+for a double with no suit...by the way he's on the cover of this months Powerlifting uSA -nice shot-you see the bend in the bar

I was gonna comment on the bend in the bar: since the bar bends
so much before the weights break from the floor, he isn't lifting the
weight as far. That's why it's so easy for him.
