Topic: Toughening Up Throwing HandPosted: 1/16/06 at 8:04am |

A few of us went out and threw yesterday morning during a heat wave here in the frozen tundra (32 degrees). After a few throws of the 28lb WFD I noticed my hands have gone from Games shape to that of a dishwashing detergent model. Other than more throwing, is there a way to toughen up my hands? |

Use a glove for the first 1/2 of throws(warmups) , then remove and toss NAKED - helps ease into it w/out removing chunks. Do your hands callous peel like a lizard after the season ? I flaked off my right hand in several places. |

Oh yeah... Thanks for the advise. After 15-20 throws at various speeds my hand was raw and cold. |

tape ,tacky then glove in that order, I don't have issues holding on to the implement, just my skin!
the skin on my hands gets thick but alway rips off when it gets too thick if I don't protect it. Edited by G-man |

Use a pumus stone to get rid of those callouses, they are NOT a good thing. I've torn mine off several times and seen several guys do the same thing. Get rid of them before they tear open. I've also talked to a couple guys that say getting rid of the callouses helps improve the grip. (KC Strongman and Buddy Hull) Leathery is fine; callousy not so good.

Ease up, C-Bull. Eclipse's is one them dandy accountants. Gotsta take care of those purdy hands of his.
Depends on your temperature tolerances. Been out practicing with Clevenger in N IL for the past few weeks in the mid 20s, and while it's certainly uncomfortable, I prefer it to 90 and humid. Of course, Clev and I are adequately insulated. |

I have ground beefy hands. I know the "punishment" they take from throwing. I was hoping I could toughen them up so I could increase my throwing volume early in the pre-season without having a bloody stup. And as the Weaselking stated, I need to look purdy (and I need all the help I can get). |

I just started wearing gloves all the time for WFD and WOB after ripping off callouses a couple of times this summer. They were both REALLY hot games, and it seems all the sweat softens the skin and makes it more susceptible tearing apart. Not a major injury but one of the really annoying ones. There are some gloves sold for hunting/shooting that are leather palm w/ a ventilated mesh or light neoprene kind of back. Usually available in a variety of stylish camo, that are thin enough not to bunch up and just thick enough to protect your hands.
