Hey-

My son and I clocked into the weight room at 8am this morning to lift before practice;... we knocked out an hour of snatches, cleans, front squats, jerks and C/Js before the rest of the guys showed up. High School wrestling practice the morning after Christmas dinner is always one of the toughest of the year, cause the overeating [and the beer], but coach got us working hard for an hour and 30 minutes on our feet with alot of hand fighting, push/pull, footwork for takedowns. I was wore out well before the sprints and jump-rope drills at the end of the practice.

But Jason and I went back into the weight room for a half-hour after practice to make it a solid 3hour workout. Banging around in the room was about 10-12 footballers with the coaches and the AD. After a few more snatches and situps, I was about to call it a day when I decided to get a few one-handed hang snatches. I picked out something that I could handle, 50lb DB, and started on a 5x5 for both hands. I thought, I'll do these ... then I'm done.

Well, I got started, ... right side, ... the sweat was dripping into a large puddle near my feet,... left side, ... my back was screaming for mercy,  ..., right side, ... it felt good to extend overhead and stretch the ribcage, ... when I heard the head football coach say to the AD, "There's a back injury waiting to happen!"

I briefly explained that we throw weight for height one handed and that I'd like to do alittle better this year than I did last year so I'm working my back with this little one-handed weight.

Now, I know that those coaches are not throwers and they're working with young high school age kids and keep it basic, but don't you guys think that they should be more aware of the one-handed lifts and maybe even working those into the workouts for the young footballers?

Kev,I started doing them a couple of years ago once in awhile. This past season I put 2' on my weight over bar I think as a result of doing them once a week on my deadlift/back day.I've had no back trouble until I overtrained a little toward the end of the season. And that wasn't anything major, just had to slow down a bit.

Perhaps he was worried you'd slip on that giant slick of sweat.

You'd think, wouldn't you?
