Morning all. I'll be doing the Panama City Beach HG in March. I've got my first strongman comp on Saturday, then back to the grind. If I can find a group of guys in the Pensacola area to train HG, I'll be alternating Saturdays between throwing and strongman. I've not done any throwing before and my experience in any of the events is limited to loading a couple trailers of manure a yr for the garden w/ a large pitchfork(then consequently unloading) and farmers walks in SM training.
I was at my grandparents last night who actually have a 3 prong fork that is rusted over that belonged to my great grandfather and is in his bin of forks he doesn't use anymore, so it'll be an honor to use that in my competitions. I'll be using some rust remover and filing down the fork to bare metal, and then putting a layer of rustoleum paint but I've read on a thread on another forum about using bicycle handlebar or hockey stick tape on the handles and on the fork itself to thicken the grip. Can I get some pictures of some of your sheaf forks to see what I need to do to restore this fork for record setting throws? If I can't find anybody in my area, I'll just continue to do cleans/snatches(which I'll do regardless) before my heavy workouts and get there early the day of my first games to try to get some practice in before the events. I am going to put together a sheaf and just toss for max height(I know I can't judge but it'll be better than not practicing) if nothing else. Thanks and if somebody lives in the Pensacola area, please hit me up on PM.

There is a thrower named Dave Bryant in Gulf Breeze. I don't know the
best way to get in contact with him, but he works for the Pensacola
Police Department, so that would be a place to start. He might be your nearest guy.
Dave also has a good example of a sheaf fork you can see and touch if you get in contact with him. Good luck, Tom |
