from a friend of a friend if anyone is interested in learning about Shinty--this group will be having a scrimmage at Loon this year....
A new, very old, sport is starting up in Quincy with the next meet planned for this weekend. The New England Camanachd Club (NECC) was formed on New Year's Day this year with a handful of players and is looking to grow the club to a full league. Shinty (also known as Camanachd in Scots Gaelic) is a fast-paced stick-and-ball sport played in the Scottish Highlands. It has common roots with Irish Hurling and is an ancient ancestor of hockey and golf. We get together on an alternating schedule of Saturdays and Sundays at the soccer fields on Quarry St in Quincy (next to the Tirrell Room/Elks Lodge) for about an hour and a half each week, with lessons on skills followed by a scrimmage to practice what we've learned. Shinty sticks (also known as camans) are provided and there is no cost to play. However, it is advised to wear shinpads, a mouthguard and, for men, a cup. The game schedule will be posted on the NECC website, with directions to the field: http://newenglandcamanachd.bellstrike.com/schedules History and rules of the game: http://uscamanachd.org/history/ Video of gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJDIWaaKfkQ |
