    Posted: 7/18/11 at 6:23am

I'm starting to wonder if I need a weight belt for my lower back and have the question: when do I need to start using one?

I'm just an idiot, pretending to be smart.

Why are you starting to wonder that?  What is bringing you to question whether you need one?

If I had to make a recommendation based your OP, then no, you don't need a belt.

I'd would be easier for me to refute your points if you stated why it "makes your back weaker".

That being said, a properly worn belt will have little to no effect with regards to any programming that includes progressive overload and the stabilizing muscles.  Wearing a belt does not make certain muscles not function, why would it?

no worries, that's what the board is for!

Besides people say stuff like that all the time, so it's fairly easy to just take what someone says at face value.  I just generally assume most people are wrong, lol

Good deal, so is there any upside to lifting without a belt?

Well, generally speaking, because of what a belt is for, I wouldn't use it under a light or warm up type load (which take note, is also progressive), and some don't use it until reaching near maximal loads.

A lot of that is just based on the individual though.

Depending on the athletes personal situation, it may be fine to go beltless all the time, and it may be fine to be belted all the time.

Let's not forget also, that you can always do additional core work if you feel like you need it.

I ask about a belt becuase when I come home from a game, all my muscles are general had-a-good-day sore, but my lower back is the only one that really aches, almost hurts even.

If it's to the point of "almost hurts", I might get it checked out before just putting a band-aid on a injury.

I'm not a big fan of wearing a belt for the games, although some do.  There is just a lot of time that we're in positions where it can't really be utilized.  The purpose of a belt is to increase intra-abdominal pressure. By pushing against the belt, internal forces act on the anterior side of your spine. This works to stabilize your spine.  As a result, more emphasis can be directed do moving the weight, and less to maintaining body position.

Weak abs and tight hams are a bad combo. And wearing a belt will help but
not for long when your leg strenght gets better. I agree with Craig about
what a belt does for you and wearing it in a game, I wear a small belt to
keep the kilt up and thats it and thats only if I'm under weight.

well for now I think I'm good since my hams are just as weak as my abs. God, I need to work out.
