I have a technical question.  On the implements such as the 56# weight is it total weight including chain and handle or is it just the weight of the weight. (that probably makes little sense I know).

The reason I ask is that you can purchase 1018 Hot Rolled 6" steel from speedymetals.com for  around $15 per inch and they cut it for you.  So I am thinking of going this route for some of the equipment.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Rob

For all implements, it's the total weight (chain, handle, etc. all included). Total length, too.

So how do you account for the weight differential when you use the same implement for WOB and WFD but you use about 2-3lbs less in chain.  Should the weight maybe a little heavier?

Depends on the implement. In some places, they use different weights for the events. Most games in my area use Old Celt weights, which are designed so that the chain stays attached - you can shorten it up for WOB, but all the links are still there and the weight doesn't change.

AH HA!! Why didn't I think of that. Probably because I am a noob.

Thanks for the insight.  I appreciate it.

Rob, I made one this way, with metals from speedymetals.com.  If you like, I can send you pics.  I will have my 28 WFD done next week.  Just actually chopped my 56 down to 42 so I can get more reps in.  You can take the whole implement to a machine shop and tell them that the entire weight with chain, handle, etc must weigh X amount, and they should be able to figure up the change needed and amount to cut off.  Good luck.  Just some info, shipping from speedy will be costly!

Thanks Andrew.  I am opting out of the speedymetals route.  I called a local steel distributor here in OKC and they can get it to me for about a $100 less than speedy's can.
