I have been doing dumbbell swings and have been working up to some
decent weight. Unlike the kettlebell swing, the dumbbell swing finishes overhead with you catching the weight. Anyone else doing these? I feel they mimic the weight over bar better than a snatch and if you look up the lift on YouTube, you may agree. Bill |

I spoke to you at the Victoria games regarding these lifts.I worked up from 110 to 150 lb db thinking that the movement would push up my WOB.It did not work for me! My problem was pushing for the heavy weights and not keeping the form anything similar to the WOB movement.
I was snatching close to the body and catching the weight with a slight drop. This still is a great movement but for WOB I think you have to stay with a manageable SIZED db that you can swing way behind your ankles. All in all,I would still do the DB swing hard to eye level and simulate the WOB with a moderate Db,kettlebell or better still throw itself. |

The Kettlebell swing done right with a KB or a T handle WILL help your hip snap for the WOB and Caber. Dan John is huge on these.

I agree, the speed of the implement is the real focus just as the speed of the weights we lift need to be fast as well. Again, weight training to support throwing. As for a 150 lb dumbbell swing that is a great lift at any rate. Bill |

DocRoc - love e'm all kindsa ways. To me it's a swinging goodmorning pull thru - release or catch. make yourself do the scoop lift at the bottom. I actually used this to finally learn the timing of the scoop. Best 135 db x 5 in 2005 catch em all - left handed too! I use a 80lb block weight and the 56. Staple of my training. Prev - swing not snatch- big radius. |

Hi Mike, Yea I actually scooped them the other day. Glad to hear you like them. If you are moving that kind of weight for 5's you are keeping the speed. Great numbers. And like you said, keeping the radius is my goal as you can pull your arm in to give a little more ump. Do you drop the bell straight down or go back between the legs. As a Highland Games guy I swing back between the legs. Do you "back hang" the weight? Bill |

Both ways - like a snatch sometimes But much more often as a swing back behind . I use a strap so grip isn't an issue. Totally functional for wob |

I've started doing these the past year to help with WOB as an asst. lift. Same motion as WOB, but only bring it to 90 degrees. right & left handed. Focus on driving the hips through & extending the legs, getting on the toes. Haven't gone more than 80lbs, but I think of it as more of a explosive/fast lift. Reps very, I try to keep good form. Don't use straps so it will help with my grip strength. Can't say that it has helped, but I do like it, and will keep doing them. |

Catch the weight overhead and add more weight to the dumbbell. Then you
can make a determination that they help your wob or not. Bill |
