Can't remember where I came across this phrase, but it was after the end of the season. (I think it was in a Ryan Vierra video?)
Admittedly, I'm new to the sport, but had not really heard a good explanation of what to do/how to execute the 2nd spin in WFD until I heard it put that way. Most of the year I had just been pirouetting like a slow-dancing bull in a tutu. We'll see if I can put it into practice soon.Sprint to the trig...Is that an accurate way to put it? |

Possibly the most important technique to understand in the games. There are different ways to approach it, but I think these are the keys. 1. You must have a good first turn and landing in the back right corner of the trig. 2. The weight cast, or pull and your sprint off the left foot should be simultaneous in the sprint phase. This will ensure you sprint straight. |

So I did a few dozen practice throws today with light weight, about 3/4 speed. Really focused on getting a good position on the first turn like Sean said. Didn't think about the rest of the throw... one thing at a time, ya know.
Wow. It felt so much different than what I had been doing. It actually felt right. (Well, as right as it can for a newbie.) I guess I had too much of a discus throwers mindset all last year. I had heard to get the weight "out in front" of me before the first spin but I never really learned how to apply that. So I waited just a while longer before turning in and "followed" the weight a little more. That really helped to put me in a better position, and under more control, than I had been finding myself in. The pleasant surprise was that although I was only focused on getting a good position at the start, I found that the footwork on the 2nd turn just kind of naturally followed. Of course, this was all at 3/4 speed with light weight, but the difference in where I ended up, in a better power position, seemed like light years away from the spiralling , flailing mess I had been doing. Cant wait for the next throwing practice day to get more accustomed to this. (Tomorrow is weights.)Thanks for the tips...I may have waited until I was 40 to start this, but I don't want to half-ass it. |

Sean, Just want to say Thanks for this post. It may not seem like much to you but the way you explained proper position in the box helped me with my technique. I took 1st in LWFD and HWFD at NE Florida in the Bs this weekend! Hopefully my buddy can send me some video from the weekend soon and I'll get it posted for you guys to tear apart. ![]() |
