No problem, Tom! I've been shot putting for 17 years and I still don't do this automatically. But when I do, my goodness does it work well

Throws again!

16# Stone
Stands x15 or so best of 43' not a lot on it today
Glides x6 best of 46' see above. Sad

HWFD x15 best of 40' just had a tough time driving the weight out. Footwork felt good though.

Light Hammer x12 best of 123' not bad. Hammers have never felt this solid this early. I know bigger throws will come.

Got out for a late night throws sesh. Only had about 40 minutes

HWFD x8 best of 41'

LWFD x8 best of 77'

not bad. No time to warm up or anything. Best part is none of these felt like I really connected with one. there is some more there.

forgot to post this training sesh

Warm Up

Hang Cleans

135x3, 135x3, 185x3, 185x3, 225x2, 245x2, 275x2, 295x1, 310x0 SO CLOSE 285x2, 285x2, 285x2

Dead lift off 2" deficit

135x5, *add doubled Red bands (around 200# at the top total) 225x3, 255x3 275x3, 295x3, 295x3 these felt great but tough due to crazy tension at top.

Front Squats

135x5, 135x5, 185x3, 225x3...shut it down. Everything felt terrible and had some serious quad pain going on. Decided it was not worth it to push through.

Tons of smashing with body tempering and my quads ended up having some serious knots and adhesion's in them. Released after 15 minutes of tempering/stretching.

Had a luck-luster throws practice today. One of those days where you cant get anything going. Frustrating, but fixable

16# Ostone
Stands x5 best of 43'-44'
Glides x8 bst of 48'-49' not bad for a non-reverse

HWFD x12 best of 40' left foot float issues

LWFD x7 best of 78' see above

HH x10 best of 97' pulling my head and shoulders WAY off the ball and not pushing. Couldn't seem to get it right

It will all be fixed but this weekend will be interesting. Doing some Sheaf tomorrow morning, maybe MAYBE some drills. It's early so I don't mind doing a bit extra closer to game days.

5/18/17

Got out early for some light throwing and lifting

22# Hammer x8 best of 98' watched some videos of Bill Anderson by chance and things started clicking in my head about what I was doing wrong. Everything felt very easy today and also like I didn't have to try hard to make it go far. Hoping this translates to a PR this season as speed increases.

20# Sheaf x15 just working on trajectory as I have nothing to throw at. Finally dialed it in so hoping to make a height this weekend.

Went to gym after

Hang Cleans + 2 Front Squats after

135x3, 135x3, 185x2, 185x2, 185x2 just moving quick

Prowler Push

40 yards x90# added at slightly faster than a walk x 3 rounds get some blood pumping

Then some smashing and rolling.

Travel day tomorrow with Rob Meulenberg then season opener at Fair Hill Colonial Gathering! This begins my 5 games in a row stretch so hopefully things kick off well!

Thanks guys! It went well!

5/20/17

Fair Hill Colonial Highland Gathering, Elkton, Maryland

PROS: Will Barron, Dave Barron, Sam Grammer, Jeff Kaste, Mike Zolkiewicz,, Rob Meulenberg, Beau Fay, John Collins, Sean Urquhart, Nikita Marzano (she threw with the pros!)

22# Hammer- 95'+ (hit 98' on third attempt but hammer broke in with 2 throws left so last round scratched, oh well)
16# OStone- 51'5.5 woo!
HWFD- 41'+
LWFD- 78'+
Caber- 75 boo
Sheaf- 26'
WOB-15'

Overall: 2nd

Overall very surprised with my performance! Have not had the most consistent practices but I definitely felt on on Saturday.

Hammer was nice! I was trying some things I had worked on only last Thursdays and they went well. With more reps and speed I think I could PR this season. Disappointed the hammer broke in third round and it cost me some points and cash but it happens and you cant control it!

Stone was the big highlight for me. Doing all non-reverse glides (never have I ever done a non-reverse glide in competition, HG's or track and field)  and I went 46'+, 48'+, 51'5. They all felt progressively better as I focused on less speed in the glide and more speed in the left arm and right side punch. Really stoked!

Weights were good. First two rounds of both weights I had mediocre throws but then turned it up a notch on the third. HWFD I was good for the win but took 3rd in LWFD behind Rob who was essentially throwing on one leg and a fresh out of retirement Sam.

Caber was the same stick as last year. I turned it last year but the ground was very wet and it definitely helped me then; this year, I just did not have it in me. It is a good pro stick but I was a bit bummed I didn't turn it.

Sheaf was nice despite going out after 26'. I was clean up to 29' but then kept throwing it too far back instead of up. But my trajectory was spot on! Baby steps!

WOB Was gross. I forgot how to throw it. I will practice this more to get my legs back into it and hopefully hit 16' a bit more consistently.

Thanks to John Finnie and John Strong for hosting and judging! It was an absolute blast and the crowd was AMAZING. The grand stands were filled to the brim. Love throwing here and for a season opener, very pleased!

Throwzzz a lot of em. Was very sore today, more than I thought I'd be. But I persevered

21# Stone
Braemar x8 best of 37'
Glides (practicing for 20# Alma stone) x8 best of 39'+ lol felt alright but definitely weird

HWFD x10 best of 40' form was good and rhythm too. Just no legs

LWFD x6 best of 79' this felt better actually...weird

HH x12 best of 97' worked on a few things so really wasn't going after any

WOB x5 just wanted to try a few things Zolk mentioned this weekend. I felt them and they appeared to work. By this point I was spent so I didn't do many.

Doing to hit some cleans and sled tomorrow and then flying to Alma Friday. Wooooooo!

Alma Highland Games, Alma, MI

PROS: Luke Crowley, Jeremy Gillingham, Sean Urquhart, Nate Parker, Kevin Becker, Jeff Kaste, Curtis Durocher, John Pilling

20# OStone- 39'5 poop 6th
HWFD- 43'1 4th
Heavy Hammer- 97'4 4th
WOB- 16' 4th
LWFD- 77'11 4th
Caber- No turn tied 5th
25# Sheaf- 22' 5th

Overall: Tied 5th.

Had a great time at my first Alma games! Nate Parker was gracious to me and others as he hosted a fat slumber party at his house which was the smelliest and best time ever. Throws had ups and downs.

20# Ostone was poop for me. Definitely capable of going 40-42' with it but I did not and it cost me overall points for sure. Good thing 20# ostone isn't a regular thing lol

Weights were good..ish. HWFD went very well but sadly it went very well for nearly everyone and 43'1 was only good for 4th. I cant complain since it's about a foot off my PR and only in May. LWFD was done later in the day so my weight groove was gone. Also, I felt slow as hell. Becker destroyed us all in these, he looks good for 48'/90' at some point

Hammer felt great! Actually not really mad about it. Just didn't have any speed on it, but I know that will get there. My last throw I fell backwards on delivery and it was my best throw so hopefully this weekend will go better.

WOB was solid. All my pulls felt good and mucho thanks to the gang for letting me know I was cockeyed in my line up with the bar. Once I fixed that 16' went over cleanly. Been a while since I cleared 16', which is sad.

Caber was the poopiest of the day for me since I definitely should have turned it. I really need to use my legs. Not much more to say here.

25# sheaf sounds cool but it is not. Came close to 24' but no cigar.

Overall a great time but stone and caber really murdered my chances of a higher finish. In the end, a fantastic games and a lot of food and fun with everyone. Gathering of the Scots this weekend and my first Canadian adventure of the year.

Gathering of the Scots Perth-Andover, New Brunswick, Canada

PROS: Matt Doherty, Mike Zolkewicz, Jeff Kaste, Scott Mchugh, Danny Frame, Dave Barron, Will Barron, Kevin Robinson

17# OStone- 44'11 2nd
HWFD- 39'5 2nd
HH- 96'11 4th
LWFD- 76'6 2nd
LH- 116'10 3rd
Caber 20', 105#- 1:45 5th
WOB- 15' 4th (LOL @ 2 misses)

Overall: 2nd

Had a very fun trip up to Perth-Andover (sadly this time on my own as Rob had family obligations) and was incredibly fortunate to stay with Dirk Bishop and his lovely family. Also got to bond with the Brothers Barron more than ever before. Needless to say, it was a fun weekend. Throws felt sluggish and I never really fell into a groove. But I was happy with where I finished.

Stone is a brick and despite only being 17# it's a tough one to toss. I felt like I may have hit 46' if I had another 1-2 attempts. Not sure even Doherty went over 50'

HWFD was sloooow. I felt like I couldn't get it moving and I LOVE this weight. Kinda disappointed here. Did LWFD later in the day and same thing here. Just felt slow. Figured a few things out on my drive home so Im gonna play with that this week during practice.

Hammers were poopy. Again, I remembered something on the drive home that i wasn't doing so hopefully I'll get back to it.

Caber was good. it's a big stick but not terribly heavy. Was able to use my legs somewhat and get it over. But then 4 other people did too, so not doing it straight enough did me no favors.

WOB felt great warming up then I got under the bar and pooped the bed all over.

Still had a grand time despite mediocre throws. I always love going to Canada. It was sad because it is Dirk's last competitive season, and Canada wont be Canada without Dirk. But I was glad to hang with him again before he hangs up the cleats and blades.

BONUS EVENT: I was fortunate to get a chance after the games to try shouldering the Castalia Stone, a new manhood stone for the Perth-Andover Gathering. It is a 260# pyramid-shaped stone and Doherty was the first to shoulder it during lunch. I came back after the games and after 4 attempts only getting it to my chest I managed to pop it up. Made up for my lackluster throws.

Rhode Island games this weekend!

Throws in a swampy field

HWFD x10 best of 42' loads better here. Still never "hit" one, but the things I thought about after last weeks games were working

LWFD x8 best of 81' again, loads better

HH x8 best of 101' I tried too much to re-invent the wheel this off season and went back to my roots. Some refining to do but it felt good.

Rhode Island Highland Games, Richmond, Rhode Island

PROS: Jeff Kaste, Sam Grammer, Mike Zolkiewicz, Beau Fay

22#Braemar- 37'+ poop 3rd
16# OStone- 50'1 2nd
HWFD- 40'9 (42'2 in extras) 1st
LWFD- 77'7 (83'10 in extras woo!) 1st
Caber- 10:30 3rd
WOB-15' 3rd

Overall 2nd

Not a bad showing for me here. Sam Grammer gave me a lot of pointers especially on weights that helped me feel positions I had not felt...like ever. It was hot. Mucho thanks to him. Overall a warm day, loads of fun!

Stones were mixed. Braemer was a nice enough rock but I kept missing a good flick. Dumb. Ostone was great, over 50' again and just missed 1st by 1 inch to Zolk. That bastard.

Weights were good. While my best throws came in extras, the ones I hit in comp I missed completely so I am happy to see the distances with a missed delivery. Once Sam talked to me and explained that I was doing it all wrong, I thew better!

Caber was one I have thrown before and thrown well. That was not the case this time. I turned it once, should have been all 3. Meh.

WOB was poop, clean to 16' like I always do. Missed 16' all 3 obvi but I realized my mistake (once again shout out to Sam for eyeing it) and I think I can make 16' more consistent from here on out.

Big thanks to Scott Sideleau for having me out! Rhode Island is where my wife is from so it's like a home town games for me almost and it's always fun. Getting ready for Chicago this weekend where it'll be an all out brawl for placement.

Warm Up

Squat

135x5, 135x5, 185x3, 185x3, 225x3, 255x2, 255x2, 255x2, 255x2, 255x2 fast as possible

Hatfields

295x8, 295x8, 295x8

KB Swings / Ab Wheel

70# x25 x3 rounds / 3x10

Pushups / Chin Ups

50 reps / 20 reps

that was all she wrote. Kind of tweaked my upper ass throwing HWFD this weekend. Definitely not my back and not the part of my ass that touches chairs but that weird in between. Took it easy today to test it all out and it's sore but not terribly hurty. Whew
