Hey there! My son is 12 and is desperate to learn the heavies! We live in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Does anyone know of lessons or point me in the right direction to find someone who does? I tried the phone number for Edwin Holcomb in Moncks Corner, SC but it has been changed. The site administrator might want to know that as well. I also tried the website for the South east association but that link is no good either. We attend the Charleston games at Boone Hall every year and he just loves it! Any help out there? Thanks so much!

Go to the festival and talk to the athletic director.  There isn't much available for minors, unfortunately, and when there is it is a novelty.  Requires special implements & permissions that HG organizations tend not to have the resources for.

As for what he can do to get ready right now, I'd recommend getting involved w/ track & field.  A great deal of crossover between the sports, although we are more personable.

That's good advice and pretty much what I figured my choices were. He took 2nd place in the children's wrestling at the Gathering and was over the moon excited. He watches the competiors with awe. LOL

Thanks so much for the response you highness!

Sheila,

Your son can always practice footwork and technique...lots of videos online (YouTube) Once he gets comfortable doing that, he can start with underweight implements and wee cabers...maybe not to get into a Games, but certainly to get a feel for the timing.

One day we'll be reading about him, I'm sure.

Shelia, Try the game at Larenburg NC. Oct 2. You may find someone there who is from Lower SC. Run by SHAG. A Game he can attend is May 30 in Greenville SC. They have a Youth Division. Hope this helps.

J,

We're in Beaufort. I had no idea about the games in J-ville! Two of my brothers live there and we visit all the time! Yay!  I'll be checking them out today! Thanks a million!

Good info.  What kind of weights they use for youth division?

The youth use the same as the Masters. 42lb heavy weight. But if he has never throw before and at his age I would start him with the womens weights. 28lb heavy weight. I believe 12lb Hammer. 8lb Stone. 12lb Sheaf. You will have to get some instructions by a experienced thrower before you get him any weights. So he doesn't get injured or injure someone else.

I've done the women's weights for a friend of mine's kid, but he was a pretty slight even at 17.

That's good to know about the weights. I appreciate the info. I found someone to help out close to home so we're pretty excited.
