Unless your name is Mike Pockoski, use both.

Personal opinion here but the transition to blades has been painful and slow.Started using about six months ago and still throw about the same with or without.
They are not a magic bullet and require work.I have alot of knee issues at the moment so to limit pain I
am throwing without and working the hammer technique hard. The blades are a supplement that helps with the hammer but technique is the engine and strength the fuel.

the blades "clicked" for me within a few weeks. My hammers went farther.

Get some blades.

Drink to the fame of it, honor the name of it, The Tartan.

Think I'll a tleast try them and see what happens.  Pinched a nerve in my back throwing the hammer last week so I'll be down for a week or two.  Next time I'll warm up more before throwing.

Try starting out with one blade.  If you're a righty, put the hammer boot on your right foot.  Lefty, left foot.

One spike will allow you to step toward the trig upon release of the hammer.  Once you get throwing with one spike dialed in, add the second hammer boot.  You will throw further with practice.  Mostly because you will no longer be concerned about your footing and can concentrate on doing the Highlands Hula.

Without spikes I was stuck at about 60-62' with the heavy hammer.  Getting dialed in on the spikes has given me average throws of 66' and a recent best of 69'.

I throw in the Masters 60+.  Imagine what the spikes might do for a young buck such as yourself.
