OK I have a question about choking up on the hammer.  I do it a little for heavy because I just don't have the horsepower needed to keep my arms long enough from the end. the overall effect seems to be a big net gain. With the light I am OK, but at 5'6" and with a 29" inseam I keep hitting the ground, like on every attempt.  Is it better to a) bring that in an inch or two or b) try to focus more on extending/leaning back?

I'm not one to give any adive, this is my first year andd will be my third games this weekend. I choke up on the hammer myself, I"m 6'-3" and have no prolem with hitting the ground during my turns but I seem to get a better throw with the shorter grip. The guys I have talked to at the games say as I get more experience that gripping at the end of the handle will give me a better throw. As I haved watched them I agree, they know a whole lot more than I will ever know and I trust there adive. I intend to keep practicing the full grip and hope one day I can be half as good as some I have seen.

Try to adjust by focusing on leaning back and fully extending.  The larger the orbit of the hammer, the further it will go.

Choking anything is bad.  Some good advice here though.
Bend knees and sink into last turn.

I don't wear blades, and as of right now I don't see myself doing so any time soon. The problem with going to blades is that it's pretty easy to get to the point where you can't throw without them.  I hear guys complain about that problem all the time.  So let's say you make the transition.   Then you go to a Games where you're throwing on hardpan dirt (Ventura) or astroturf on plywood (Enumclaw, and a lot of So Cal SAAA Games)   or really loose dirt like in an arena somewhere and you can't wear blades and you're hosed.

Besides, I see throwers all the time who are wearing blades to no point whatsoever. Their technique doesn't demand the stability that blades offer.  They just wear them because they think they're cool, or someone said they'd throw father with blades on.  They'd be better advised to work on technique....bend the knees, get the hips working, loosen up, get long arms, catch the ball further back and when they get all that down, THEN move to blades. THEN they might see those extra ten feet.

I'm sticking with cleats and/or turf shoes. When I've developed my technique to the point where I start throwing at or near 100 feet I'll start worrying about blades. I'm nowhere near that, now.

The above is the opinion of one reasonably good, but not great old fart geezer-in-training. Your mileage may vary.

gnome...is that Mr. Duboo?

And alan.  I dont think its a matter of needing to get to a certain skill level to move up to blades.  It has a different feel, and I consider the technique different.

It is true that it becomes more difficult to throw without them...ive definitely noticed that anyways.  But at those games (In SoCal we have 2 out of 5 that arent blade friendly) you can still manage an adequate throw.  It is fine as long as you know that you will be able to unleash the power of the blades at another game.

In my case, the above opinion is from one of moderately decent skill, but no great shakes.
