3/20/10

Celebrated spring by throwing some caber and hammer. Only went real
light, but still was a pretty good workout. About 20 light throws with the
12lb lady's hammer, and another 6 or so reverse winds. Probably best
length was about 90ft but I wasnt going for length.

Ran through some caber with a couple of lighter cabers, just working on
grooving my pick/balance, timing. about 15 total picks and tosses.

Then back to the basement:

High Pulls 135x5x2
Cleans 135x10, 225x5x5
Snatches 135x5x5
Dumbbell rows 60x10x3 (each arm)
Safety squats 155x10, 205x5x2, 255x5, 275x5x2

Not much to report this week, except I got my 40'+ in the shot at the
championships.

Unfortunately, all this shot put has my shoulder aching a bit - so going to
back off any overhead lifts, just concentrate on squats and redo some of the
rehab work until it stops being whiny.

(well, plus hockey of course)

OK - tweaked my left knee a bit when I got my skate caught in a rut, so now
I am truly pathetic.

30 minutes recumbent biking, lots of shoulder therapy exercises is about all
I can manage.

Hapy Full Rotation off the grass? I forgot how much time and patience (in the back) it takes. I've been doing some work with the 16 pound steel shot from the old Soviet Union ( I had to have it as a keep sake for my first international competition, all red back then, not anymore, got some usa rust all over it) and my wrist, fingers and shoulder are a hurting-seeing the Doc the 21st.

Good job making 40'

Yes, I am thinking of making the plunge this year to full rotation on the
grass. I saw you were doing it earlier in the year, and I think it will help
me also.

Somewhat disappointed in the 40' toss, didnt really catch any of my
throws at the Nationals, but a goal is a goal. The circle at the field house
there is really close to the wall (in my opinion) on my first warmup toss, I
ended up toeing the wall when I came out of the back, plus felt like my
nose was only inches from it as well. I didnt realize I swung my leg and
body out that far until I hit it, but that kind of threw me off my game a
bit. I wish I had had about 5 more warm up tosses, but c'est la vie. I am
going to throw Shot a couple times this summer outdoors I think as well.

Next week is the last day of hockey, so my training can really start.

I've re-connected w/ some old pals in the throwing community. My son just started throwing at some age group ( sub-sub Jr's) meets and is doing well. Focusing on the glide with him as he's going to be in 6'4"-6'6" range when he matures.

May see you at the Highlander in May.

More hockey, but this was my last week of 2 nights/week, so now I add a
day of throwing.

Today:

12" step ups - 155x10,205x5,255x5x5
High pulls from the floor- 135x10
High pulls from the hang - 135x5x3
Push Press - 135x5x5 (these still hurt very much)
Plate Twists - 60lbx10x5
Atlas stone loads onto 51" platform - 205x5, 265x1

Benching and incline is not so bad - they don't really hurt, though I am still
"unstable", however anything overhead is just a killer.

I would ditch overhead, then, and test it only very occasionally to see if it clears up.

Power Cleans - 135x10, 185x5, 205x3, 225 miss x3 - only pulling to my
nipples,
need more bar speed

Front Squat (havent done these in 2 years) 245x1x5 I thought 245 would
be a good warm up weight, turned out it was plenty for me, had lots of
problems stabilizing the weight out of the bottom - should improve a lot
with a little work I think

Incline dumbbell press (60lb DB) 10x5

Dumbbell Rows 10x1 on each arm

overhead dumbell press (25lb DB) 1 set of 50 on each arm

Deadlift 295x5 345x2 365x2 385x2 435 miss

4/14 throws day

10x Overhead shot with 16lb stone
10x standing throws with 16lb stone
10x full rotations with 16lb stone
10x 28lb LWFD tosses
10x 100ft sprints
Husafell stone carry lighter stone about 250lb - 100ft

overhead and standing throws felt good, full rotation with stone is an
experiment in progress... I think I might need to change my shoe on my
right foot, as with the Turf Tanels it seems to get bound up, though I am
also having issues on the initial turn on my left foot as well. Well, I guess
keep working and experimenting with it.

knee is fine - no issues there - just needed to give it a couple days off.

shoulder is still 50% or so, but hey that's 50% more than it was at this time
last year.

I forgot how bruised my jawbone gets after a open stone workout. I think
we should go traditional scottish and throw a shot.

Hapy, how are you doing a braemar with the band. Sounds like a
great idea.

I basically just wrap the band around a post in my basement and grab the
end of the band. I stand at just where the band has a tiny bit of tension on
it, and then simulate a braemar standing stone toss - trying to use legs and
hips to help me drive the band all the way out to full extension.

Its kind of a super version of one of the shoulder rehab exercises I am
supposed to be doing. Doesnt seem to hurt it, and I get a good burn, plus
work on timing my legs/hips/arm, since I can't just arm the band out to full
extension without the hip drive.

Went over to play with Amy and Carlton Shedrick

About 10 LWFD throws - still trying to find a groove here about 55ft?
about 5 WOB throws - maybe 12'? We were just throwing at a tree branch
which was at 13' I hit it once.

Front Squat - 135x10, 135x5, 179x5, 225x3, 269xmiss, 247x1
Stiff leg Snatch grip deadlifts 225x8x3
Atlas Stone bent over row 121lbx8x3

missed that front squat out the front - still trying to get comfortable with
these.

12lb hammer winds - 8 sets of 5, plus 8 more throws (I decided to be
contrarian to the other folks throwing overweight hammers, to be kind to
my shoulder)

Some caber tosses with my "Big Crooked" stick. It appeared to pick up
weight over the winter, or I have gotten weaker. After 2 dropped picks,
and 3 45 degree tosses, I tossed in the towel...

56lb WOB x10

24lb shot Overhead throw x5
24lb shot Braemar style x6
24lb shot step through x6
24lb shot full rotation (in the shot circle) x10
16lb shot Overhead throw x5
16 lb shot standing throw x6
16lb shot step through x6
16lb shot full rotation x25

Very frustrating day with the shot working on stuff. We'll see how my
shoulder reacts to that kind of volume, but so far so good 12 hours later.

4/26 - short and sweet:

Atlas stone loads - 205x1x5, 260xmiss

4/30

16lb standing stone throw x6 (35ft)
24lb standing shot throw x6 (29ft)
16lb full rotation stone throw x6 (38ft)
HWFD x6 (28ft)

Lots of problems with full rotations... needs some serious work. I feel like I
have lots of acceleration and power, but just no balance when I hit the front.
I think next practice I am going to just throw in sneakers.

What a great workout, anvil , concrete block and a telephone pole. Great versatility being displayed here! Would love to see a picture with you holding the anvil. I am showing this workout to my wife so she sees I am not alone in lifting heavy things.

For some reason, I am having trouble uploading a picture to the forums.

Here is a link to Eric Suave doing a "lever lift" of the 660lb (estimated weight)

Apparently it was taken out of the Boston shipyards - we couldnt find any
markings on it.

5/2

12lb hammer - no spins (just pulling it from zero point) - x10
12lb Hammer - 1 spin - x10
12lb Hammer - 2 spins - x10
12lb hammer - 3 spins - x5
Braemar stone (24lb) x5
Open stone 16lb full rotation x5
LWFD x5

I just wore regular sneakers doing the full rotation on the stone today,
and it felt MUCH better. I was able to get my legs underneath me. Too
bad my upper body was shot from yesterday, or I might have had some
decent distances.

OK, time for a few days off I think...
