Topic: CALLING ALL 190S... Posted: 12/31/08 at 7:47am |
|
There was 88 of us last year nationally. That's not bad. I believe we can do better than that. Lets all continue to recruit as many people as we can, both 190s and the huge freaks." Did I just type that out loud" I meant huge athletes , sorry. But really, 190s can be very competitive and with the weight limit you can only be so big and strong. Kevin Henderson represents the max of those factors along with perfect technique . Other outstanding 190s would be Jim Spalding , Mark Howe last years top finisher, and POWER HOUSE Davin Boydstun... And when ever you see Kevin Henderson this year YOU BETTER THANK HIM FOR HIS HARD WORK. Without him 190s would not be here. It all starts in Phoenix, see you on the field... Lowell T.

Lowell,
Very nice what you said about Kevin and true too. I watched him all those years make sure that class never died. He spent all his time traveling all over to support the games that would host the lightweight class and was instrumental in 2002 with Bill Butler in Sacremento so that the MWC now continues it. Many many 190 guys always had to lose weight but Kevin and a few others were just naturally built for that class; always enjoyed watching them. You, are the next voice for the little guys! Go get em and keep things going!
We'll see you in KC this year, cheap traveling now that gas is back down so low!
Lori

Definately want to come to Alma this year. No problem with keeping under
190. I just finished a week of holiday chowing and I'm STILL not there. Is 43
years old still too old to expect that growth spurt? ;-)

There was a few up here in AK that weren't listed on the database , so you could add about 6-7 more to that list !

Its true, any top 190 can hang with the A's. I think this demonstrates the importance of technique and how 190's depend on it.

Why isn't it 200? 200 is a nice round #. It matches up roughly with a well used metric #, 90kg, and would add matches up with MWC classes. Just a thought...I'll go away now.

Nice Thread Lowell.
It is good to see the 190 still fertile. It had a great time in the late 1990's and new influx of throwers since, and the advances of the marks over the years is tremendous and respectable, for such light body to implement ratios. Techniques have been sharpened by many over the years, and the interests of more 190's throwing is encouraging.
The weightclass has always been 190 for this class, the records are 190, the history is 190; anything but 190 would be arbitrary anyways and a psychological number anyhow. (Lets not debate this thing again, please.)
Good luck to All in 2009. Hope to see many of you here and there in the year ahead.
Regards,
Doug

Thanks Doug, For the support and the respect and recognizing the pound to implement ratio. 190 is the standard and always will be. Thanks again Doug. See you on the battlefield.

Lowell,
I think I threw with you at Alma a few years back, looking forward to it
again this year. I had a chance to meet Lori and Kevin at the Wyoming
Games in 2007, great people.
The Burchett family - all robots! Incredible throwers and great people as
well.
Mark P. how is the knee?
Any chance for a 170lb class .
I enjoying throwing/competing at any Game, but given the chance, I'll take
the 42 over the 56 any day.

MY understanding of where "190" came from was the class was started by Greg Bradshaw in the RMSA (Rocky Mt. Scottish Athletics). He wanted a class where some of the younger teens and smaller guys could enter and not deal with the fat boys. He made a decision and it has been that ever since. Then I believe Dan DeWelt started the 190 National Champs in Tulsa and then Steve Scott took it over in Kansas City. Then Kevin Henderson came along and kept it alive and kicking. Bill Scruggs probably figured that old guys that threw 190 were probably getting old and fat and didn't want to hassle with getting down to 190 (I recall Laynne Burnett coming into the 190 nationals in KC one year literally vascularized like a bodybuilder to make body weight, Randall, too).
I know that I always tried to have a 190 class in any games that I AD'ed. There have been many good ones. Doug McDonald (not the Canuck, but the REAL Doug "McDougal" Donald), Kevin Rogers, Jim Spalding, Isaac and Nathan Burchett, Howe, Laynne Burnett, Tim Pinkerton, and Brian Randall). Who has a list of the National winners?

I'm sure that Kevin and Lori Henderson have records for 190s nationally for the past few years. Their running that show now. Mark Howe got it last year.
