None. A vastly overrated exercise, IMHO.

Here here!

And for tall people who work out in a gym that does not have an accommodating ceiling height...pointless.

My biggest problem for its use in highland games is....wob ISN'T a one-armed snatch. It's a swing more than anything else.

The best training for wob IS wob, but if you're going to get some gym work in for it, I'd pick kettlebell swings where you try to mimic the hip drop and chase.

i like it, and my standing wob was better when i used to do them a lot...could do 205, never made 225.  teaches you to have a LONG triple extension or you don't make the lift...for me, i feel in this lift more than others (i.e. regular snatch).  long triple extension = good wob for me.

wob for me isn't anywhere close to a swing.  it's a vertical movement, not a swing fwd-back movement in my mind.

i avoid KB swings like the plague because i feel they are too similar (so my body gets confused and starts swinging when it needs to be vertical).

but ask the 18 ft guys how to do it.  wth do i know!  standing wob killed me this year!

I think there are 2 types of "standers":

Matt/Andy Vincent - Huge huge huge vertical pull. One hand snatches I bet would work great for them. They don't get a huge back swing, just enough to get the weight to drop at their feet and hit a massive vertical/squat type pull. You'll also notice both of them leave the weight out front a lot. One of the con's of this style as it's tough to get the weight behind the bar. It's not impossible and I don't disagree with the style, but it is very tough and is essentially the reason I switched to the Zolk method, because I was going out at 14ft, leaving the weight out front over 16ft.

Zolk/Sandford - Slow cast, straight legs and hips in-line until the weight passes through. Then push the weight behind you. Get your shoulder down between your legs and get as the weight as far back as possible. As soon as the weight drops, it's go time. Push the hips forward into triple extension and push your torso backwards. Counter so hard that you have to take a step backwards or you're fall down. With this tech, I feel one hand snatches would be a waste of time and I think that's what Sean's getting at as well.

I'm finally nailing this down as the accuracy takes a bit to get used to when switching from one to the other. I had some huge huge pulls in Ventura but they wouldn't let me keep going due to time constraints.

One of the things I love about this sport is the difference in techniques. It's all about what works for you, rather than what works best.

Mike, I think it's the fact that you can go 200+ with a one-armed snatch that is working for you, not the movement itself :)

Interesting comments.
So depending on your style do swings or snatch , I suppose doing both could confuse !

I think if you're twitchy as hell, you can pull vertical. If your greatest concentration of fast-twitch fibres is in your beady little eyes like me, better make sure you're pulling on that weight all day long.

Definitely.

With the 'swing', its a matter of waiting until the weight pauses at the back, just before it starts to naturally drop. And then you chase it with the hips to drop lower and get the scoop and lift.

But yeah, there's a definite pause before the pull. Watch Dan McKim, Matt Sandford and Zolk for great examples of all of that.

I've got a couple of marginal videos myself but I shouldn't be used as an example for anything good :)

Very little carry over. Matt had a great wob because he had a world class hi pull 400 plus if I recall a few of our conversations. Single arm snatch, Swings pull throughs etc good compliment as warm up cool down hip mobility.

Develope a big pull with a flat back and train the event over and over at 1-2' below your best- no other way to develope wob timing. Snatch grip dead in the 500's is a start.

I MAY BE BIG , BUT I'M FAST

For me i did  only wide grip pulls from the hang, hang snatch and one hande pulls with a shrug.I stood on 2 boxes and had a long narrow heavy cylinder that i did reps with. Also had a 60lb weight  made with stands in the yard.Would set small goals like 6 or 8 over and not finish until they were all made.OCD?

I went up to around 400 x5 but i hurt my ac joint .When i did these i stood on top of the boxes and the length ot the shaft and handle set my hips almost the exact hight that i would have been when throwing. This exercise i did very slowly and controlled.Hook grip thinking legs, hips, shrug and both left and right handed.I wouldn't recommend going heavy ,its the feel you want .I also remember when throwing wob well the pull seemed to be very long and smooth.Hope this helps.

My favorite Matt WOB story is from Scotland in 2000 and I'm sure he doesn't even remember it. The best part about throwing in Scotland is that you get to throw against EVERYBODY.

Anyway, Matt just finished clearing 15'6" or something in the WOB and it was enough for the win that day. I believe it was Stephen King who just shook his head and said "Matt, we should make you throw left-handed."

Matt looked honestly puzzled for a sec and just said "That WAS my left hand. My right arm is sore."

Then he asked what the field record was (16'8"), called for 16'10", actually used his right hand, one-shotted it and grabbed an extra 50 quid :)

I still can't believe they set the stage up at 130' when the field record was already at 150.
