Sac Valley Pro Caber:
Old growth doug fir harvested out of Dutch Flat in the Sierra Nevadas November 2007.  Solid stick with tight growth rings and a distinctive crook a wee bit north of midway.

Picture above shows "Captain Crook" in the foreground drying out prior to finishing / painting / weighing / etc.  When the dust settled, we had a 19'10" stick that weighed 119 lbs the evening before the comp.

Only three turns on this stick in the Pro Caber: Larry Brock twice, and the big Scottish lad from Fife once.

I'll have a picture of the finished stick bearing Larry Brock's signature tomorrow.

Pro results are up, thanks to Larry Brock! It was an interesting day, a little hot (85) and more than a little windy. Sean was strong throughout, Larry was more or less in cruise-control, Eric set a p.r. in the braemar and threw the heck out of the heavy hammer, HB was in the mix all day. The rest of the group had some good throws and some not so good throws... Beautiful new caber; Larry and Bruce Robb were the only two to turn it, but there were a number of 80's and 85's. Sean, Larry and HB over at 18' in the WOB, Sean wins it at 18'6". Great group of guys, good BBQ afterward. Thanks to all!

Couple of pictures from the Sac Games...

L-R: KarynD, The Jayster, MandyK.  Jay won the Masters 50-54 class on Sunday.

(Edit: That's MandyK on the right.  My bad.  I'm old and don't hear so well. You know, SDnR&R).

After a seven year retirement, 64 years young Dan DeWelt is back throwing.  The Sac Valley Games were his first comp.  A little rusty but still strong and a force to be reckoned with.  I predict records will fall.

Sorry, I was unable to get a snapshot of the Captain Crook caber.  It was already loaded up on the truck.

I'll keep working on it.

As soon as I get the am results, I'll get them in the database. A few shy of 100 competitors; it may take a while to enter them with my 2-finger typing technique... record crowds for the weekend. Many thanks to the judges, scorekeepers, runners and all the other volunteers it takes to make a games of this size run like clockwork!!! Also, a shameless plug for our caber makers - California Caber Company (Frank Lux and Kit Sonneson); none better! Next games - Livermore in 3 weeks. If you're planning on competing, go to the SHA website (www.scottish-heavies.com) and download the entry or contact Mike Q. at caberjudge@aol.com

Dan looks pretty good, not too much the worse for wear. How's his health these days? Thanks for the pictures.

Health is good...Was apparently greatly exaggerated by "the media" and for personal reasons Dan chose not to correct the misinformation.

I know nothing of his reasons and didn't ask.  Just glad to see him back throwing.  He's a class act and a great technician.

Thanks for posting the picture Kit (even though I was too busy laughing)!  It's Mandy not Mindy, for clarification (I dream of my throws being mistaken for hers though)

A huge thank you to everyone involved at the Sac Games. The games were great with fabulous people at every turn, from the volunteers, scorekeepers, judges, athletes and crowd.  Jay & I felt that it was an honor to compete in the games that remembers a great man...Bill Butler! Looking forward to next year!

Josh/guys-

I am dying being this close to so many games, but so far away. I have had a track meet every weekend a games has been in N. California. I am hoping to start throwing in May, and then hit a game or two this summer. I have not lifted (honestly) since October. I tried to get some lifting in before the Reno HG. That is where I met a mountain of a man called Chad Aichs. He is VERY strong (as Craig knows) and very powerful. What Chad lacks is flexibility and Range of motion (which he has admitted), but he is making it up and training for it fast. He and I talked of training last fall, but my new job here at Nevada ate me alive. I have a hunch that Chad and I will end up training a bit this year because I need someone to push me (or pull me) and I have the facilties and implements here on campus in Reno. Chad is a very talented guy who is hellbent to succeed at the games...lookout world! As for me, I won't have the free time this summer with the trials. I have an athlete here that will be throwing and that takes me into mid July. If I can get my stuff together I will go at it. I am looking at the schedule and seeing where I can make it. Is there a chance that I could come over for a weekend and just throw with you guys?

Longwinded....my apologies.

Can you thicken him up a little?  He didn't quite block out the sun....

No question he'll be good, and soon.

TJ:  PM me if you want to throw sometime.

lol, i actually told him to drop some and he's currently down 40lbs.  His PL weight of 385 isn't much benefit in trying to be quick for HG.
