one smaller squat for mankind.

Oh well. First time since my brain exploded that I actually had 350lbs on a bar and squatted it. Squats were the exercise I was most leary of since if my neurosurgeon was wrong and this was an aneurysm and not a cyst, then enough blood pressure in my head and, well...let's just say the phrase "Squat 'till you die" isn't as appealing when it is an actual possibility.

So anyway I got me hairy arse under 350 and got it twice. That's now 2 out 3 of my return to lifting goals down. Deadlift back over 400, and squat back over 350. Still nothing to write about (I guess I just did) but at least I feel like I am back in the game. Now if I could just do something about that stupid bench press.

As someone who has been walking the comeback trail for the past year, I can tell you that first workout where you feel like you move some decent weight in the squat and deadlift feels great!  I learned not to try and jump big week after week...lift something that is heavy, back off and do some speed work and reps the next week or two, come back up and do more weight again.

It is tempting to go until you can't go anymore with the weight...but coming back is way different than building up as a kid the first time.

Andrew,

That is outstanding work, and for what it is worth, I am proud of you.  It takes a lot for a person to recognize their limitations, the limitations placed on them by others...and to overcome them both.

One of the best pieces of advice I ever received from my father was about fighting.  He said "Duncan, I do not ever want to hear about you starting a fight.  But if you find yourself in the middle of one, finish it."  I asked him how it was I was supposed to do that, being a wee'un, having no fighting experience and no desire to develop it any sooner than I had to.  He followed that with "Duncan, be the guy willing to go all the way.  Be willing to do the thing the other guy will not do, and you will never lose."

Andrew, you have done just that.  Keep going, keep fighting, and do what you must.

Respectfully,

Duncan McCallum

Wow, way to stay in the game!

Now you didn't say it, but this is taken care of...right?  You are being safe?

Ya, I was cleared.  Thanks for asking.  The "incident" happened last January, I was cleared to begin lifting at the end of June.    Started throwing again in Mid-July (Thanks Hapy!!).  There was a few months where I was not allowed to pick up anything hevier than a gallon of milk.  Squats were just the one thing I was a bit apprehensive about.

awesome job Andrew.  I am on that trail myself... was cleared to start cleaning, jerk/push pressing, and doing snatches this week - only at 25%, but its a start.

Still up in the air whether i will be having surgery yet, so I am still hopeful to be able to get out there and throw this year.

I'm so slow moving out of the "other" forum.  Great courage Andrew!  Excellent spirit sir!

On that bench thing you mentioned.  I don't know if this will work for others or if Weider has claimed it as one of his principles but I am going to assume he hasn't...

For months I was doing 2-3 reps adding weight up to about 85% of a max.  24 reps total at the most.  Then my world turned upside down and I spent a great deal of time in depression and stopped lifting.  Three weeks ago I decided to try something different:

The Shingler instinctive-stupidity-pain-principle:

Sets adding 20 # on a ladder 8,6,4,2,1.  Standard issue football lifting ladder sure.  Then I dropped back down and did the same almost 8,6,4,2 and then dropped back and did 8, 6, 4.  Man boobs freaking hurt for 3 days!

The next week: 8,6,4,2,1 then 8,6,4,2, AND 1.  Then 8,6,4.  Same pain.

This week, yesterday, I did 3 X 8,6,4,2,1.  Less pain.

Next week I will jump the ladder 10-20# starting out and each additional set.

I don't know how long it will last but I seem to be moving forward again.  I don't know if it works on stuff other than bench but I'm encouraged!

For whatever that's worth...

Andrew has to be strong just to carry what must be a very large sack.  I am a huge fan amigo.  Keep us advised as this is a lesson in courage and tenacity.

I don't know any of you guys but I know surgery and comebacks - it seems to be a part of this Masters lifting - throwing game we play.  Gutsy comeback on the squats - good luck and remember - slow and steady wins the race.

berby - what do you weigh now, like 250??  haha

I did pain free snatches and clean/presses at 95lb on Saturday.  My dead and my squat are way down from my max also - missed a 385lb dead and had to dump a 315 squat also- thats what i get for just doing rehab and playing hockey for 4 months.

I am thinking I will be in shape enough to throw at Rhode Island though, so I am claiming victory, but the real test will come once the snow melts and I actually get outside and try to throw some stuff.

I can relate Hapy, I was planning to get out and throw this weekend, but there is still enough snow to cover the kids sandbox.  My stones are still under like 2 feet of hard pack.

Damn, I'm up to 185 and I feel like the fattest man alive. The other day I squatted 185 (counting bodyweight) and I'm still recovering... next time I'll leave the donut on the floor.
