Kind of a strange question...I seem to have big practice throws, then at the games I throw short.  I keep thinking it is because it takes me about 5-10 throws before I hit my spots in practice...in a game I never have the impelement long enough to get some good tosses in.  Suggestions.  I have thought about taking my own implements with me when I travel so I can warmup properly (meaning I have a good sweat going and body feels loosey goosey).  Thoughts?

Hey Jeff, I asked this same question before because I feel the same way about warming up. It seems the general rule of thumb is to not bring extra implements, even if you plan on sharing, to the games due to safety concerns.  But if its cleared by the ad before hand, all the other competitors are willing and able to use it and there is enough room for extra implement(s) to be thrown, I would think it there's no reason not to.

At Naperville, you might not have noticed, but Luke and I had a pud which we usually bring with us to games for a pre game warm up.  Of course its not the same as the implements but it sure helps get alot of aches, pains and cracks out before the real warmups begin.

Wade,

I did notice that.  Where did you get that at?  Did you make it or purchased it?  It seems that with 10-12 throwers I only get a couple of tosses in and I never seem to feel really loose with my movements.  I might look into getting a weight just to get me going a little.

are you doing a complete warm up before the event? Try high knees, butt
kicks and aggressive skipping. Gets you warmed up and primes the nervous
system. the warm up tosses are not for actually warming YOU up - just to
renember the feel of it before you lay one out in comp.

the pud we use is actually an old boat anchor. Luke's dad bent and welded a piece of 1/2 inch round stock to it, put a couple of supports to the handle and away we went. I actually got started in the Games through tossing puds with Luke because his throws coach uses it for a portion of their workouts. They (UW La Crosse throwers) have a bunch of different puds, with the 25 lber being the most used. Unfortunetly I don't know where they got theirs, but it might be that Luke's coach got a hold of a couple of heavy chunks of steel and had handles welded on. There might be places that sell them, but I wouldn't waste my money. If you don't have a chunk of steel lying around, i would suggest buying a 25lb weight with the handle built into the weight. I know that's what Luke used for a while before he had 24 hour access to school's puds. If you are interested in using puds in your workout, i can lay out the throws that we do for you or I think they might be online somewhere.

Will...I definately need to do more of that.  I sometimes get a little lazy and I need to be more aggresive and make sure I am ready to perform.

Wade,

I will try it and see what happens.

thanks.

Willie B is right on, the is general warm up for your nervous system is key. I do a dynamic flex series (movement drills with stretching), also some Kb type swings with the wob. If I can, I will lift before the game that AM (light squats, step ups, snatch pulls), most hotels have weights, or you can bring DB, bands etc in the car with you. It is a little extra work, but I would rather do a little more, and hit big throws early in the comp, it does wonders for the rest fo the day.

When you do all of that, you should not need as many actual throws to get warm.

It may also have to do with the need for more reps/drills in your preparation.  The stone is the only event that I throw farther in practice than in competition...but my best throws always come after 10-12 throws in practice.

When I get to competition I start thinking about every position while I'm throwing the stone because I have no confidence in my technique.  Listening to Ryan V., I think that I need a lot more reps and drills with a consistent technique in the months leading up to the season, so that when competition day comes the nervous system will execute the motion automatically.

Dynamic skips (google polish sprint drills) ----HATCHET  swings with a wt-4-ht...some pulls with the caber.   A hundred years ago I would bring a Power Ball to do dome drill work...take your 2-3 WARM UPS AND YOU SHOULD BE GOOD TO GO.  The body KNOWS how to throw far....shut off the brain....
Have a GREAT Day !
