Well I guess my ole stupid ky brain could not find the topic on this board where the celtic was discussed. Anyway congrats to larry brock on a fine weekend of throwing. He was on fire all day. A great comp that came right down to the wire.

What? the superbowl of highland games and you think that people on a highland games forum care about that? looooooooooooooool! But there was a quick thread, it's on page 263 now. Seriously though, congrats to Brock for being that NATIONAL CHAMPION. The throws were big all weekend. I mean look at the winning throws... BS - 42+ OS - 55+ 56 - 47+ 28 - 92+ HH - 117+ LH - 140+ Sheaf - 34+ WOB - 18'
Wow. |

Geeeee I wonder Craig why theres a pro board? I find it a little odd that very little mention of the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP has taken place on this forum. The mr olympia took place this weekend and i bet you the bodybuilding boards are all fired up with stuff about who won and who should have won. |

Before this thread, there were 20 posts in two threads
on the Celtic Classic, not including preview stuff. Very few people on the board were there; only the highlights have been posted, not the full results; no video is available yet; photos of only two events are available; and only three of the participants have said anything about it. Without input from the people who were there - i.e., the pros - there's not much to talk about. For example, you said "a great comp that came right down to the wire." Really? Cool. That information wasn't available to us before now. How close was it over the last couple of events? I did see that Sean Betz edged out Larry Brock in the 28 (I'm assuming it was the final event, as usual), but Mr. Bowflex won the overall anyway. How close were they? What kind of throw would Sean have needed to take the win - something reachable, or something like 100+? How close behind was Ryan? How did the crowd react to this? You're right, there's lots to talk about, and I think there are people interested in talking about it, but we need some basic info to work with. And that has to come from the people who were there. That's true about a lot of things. For example, the guy who just took second place in the World's Strongest Man also happens to be a thrower, who has managed to beat some of the biggest names in our sport at a few games over the past couple of years. I happen to find that interesting. I'd like to know more - is he a fluke, or a guy who might some day be the first since Capes to hold world titles in both sports? I know there are at least a couple of people who post here who have competed against him, but they haven't bothered to say anything. Blame us for the crap, sure, but don't blame us for not talking about something if y'all won't, either. |

This is completely from an interested party. I have to agree with agm on this...I would love to know more about the Celtic, however, our community is not like Bodybuilding where they have recaps during the show, after the show and then all that info gets printed into four different publications for general consumption. Most of us, myself included, only have this website where we can find out about the games. Maybe it is time for us to have someone do reports on the games with more of an insider flavor on how everything went down. Again, I am with agm on this and I would like to know how everything went down. But with limited publicity most of us will only be able to read small excerpts and then look at the numbers at the end. my .02 |

Sebastian Wenta, a Polish shot (and maybe discus?) guy. He's also done well in some games, but I don't know if those were traditional games or included strongman events. |

Adam is totally right, so ill try to put together a lil something til the results get posted. As most know, or maybe dont know, the Celtic always kicks off on friday night with a caber for distance challenge event. A short light stick, with a line painted for the toss. furthest point gets measured. All of us try a different variety of runs, various timing on the pull, agles to try and get it downhill, etc.... it's a fun event, and one i have historically been terrible at. with luck on my side, i squeak a win out here, with pretty much everyone within a few feet. Saturday, we threw the light hammer, braemar stone, 56 wfd, caber, sheaf. Hammer as the first event is not fun. Brock and KO open up on fire, both going 137+. Betz in the 130 range, quite a few 120s. KO leads until the last round, brock blasts a 140+, Betz does some catching up at 134+. Braemar stone i felt good about, i opened big only to foul it. Lots of people going 40+ (with a 24+lb. stone), so it's pretty tight. I go 41'8 for the win, and add a foot on extras. The field records are Peturs, so we can forget about ever chasing those down. 56 wfd brock with a 47+ on his last to take the win. RV and KO around 45, irrc, sean with 44+, and i *think* everyone else was over 40. Sheaf - HB3 can throw some serious sheaf. him and ryan at 34, wow, that's high. Will BArron and DAve Barron both with monster sheafs days, and over 30. KO was sitting in 3rd at this point, fails to clear 28' and drops to 7th. Caber - a fairly easy stick with lots of turns. nothing really exciting. multiple 12:00s. A request was made for a bigger stick next year. Zolk steps in a hole, rolls his ankle all kinds of nasty. ends up being ok, comes back and kills the stick. Sunday we thew heavy hammer, open stone, 56 WOB, 28 wfd and a challenge caber. Brock owns the hammers, with a big 117 ftw. KO not far behind at 114, betz, HB, RV, all in the 110ish range. Open stone - RV opens at 55+, wow. Lots o 50+ throws, KO with a huge 51+. I go 51 on my first, and 55+ on the next to take the win. 56 WOB, as Will had said previously, 16' will get you last place. Myself, Dave Barron, and Zolk were the only standers in the bunch. With the exception of Dave Brown and his side style at the lower heights, which is totally badass. Zolk gets a 17 stand, i go 16'6", HB3 spins his way to 18' and the win, Brock, KO, and Betz, right behind. RV loses points here, and tightens up the top 3, who have pulled away from everyone. 28wfd - its between brock, betz, and vierra at this point, with brock just needing a "normal" throw for him to keep the lead. He gets it at 91+, sean goes 92+ and takes a few cracks at the WR, RV up there as well, WB goes 83, Dave Brown 82, KO 85. Challenge caber - same caber as the day before, everyone tired and dead, lots of turns, no real excitement here. I dunno who has the results, but even those of us that were there are anxiously awaiting to see. For me, i'd like to imagine for a moment that i was healthy enough to throw hammers, and see what coulda been. It all played out like this: 1. Brock 2. Betz 3. Vierra 4. KO 5. HB3 6. Dave Barron 7. C. Smith 8. Dave Brown 9. Zolk 10. Will Barron
well, how'd i do? |

KO, I started a Celtic thread a few weeks back. The Celtic is a pro games only, as AGM said; if you guys don't post about the results, etc., we have nothing to comment on... I'll assume you all were too busy chatting on the pro board

The very same Sebastian Wenta that I nominated, on this very board, for a slot at the World's in Pleasanton a few years ago (as I recall Steve tried to get him but there was a scheduling issue). |

Awesome recap. Thanks. Can you describe the side style used for WOB by Brown. Coming from a relative nebie to the sport...what is it about your hammer throwing that drags you down?

Not bad, not bad. Now just do that every week... I missed the past couple of years, but I've been to Classic about a dozen times. Sometimes the competition has been fierce, sometimes the fact that it's late in the season and everyone is tired has been pretty obvious, with decent but unexceptional throws. Since it was named the national championships, it looks like those days are gone. I won't be missing any more! I just compared those results to the rankings (since Kurt hasn't rolled over to next year's Bethlehem qualifying), and it's pretty close in terms of placings - Ryan dropped two slots, and Craig and Mike Z. swapped places. Final numbers seem to be close to qualifying numbers, too. That says a lot about the ranking system, but also about people throwing at or near their best on the big day. Very impressive, folks. The organizers claimed the overall festival may have had their highest attendance yet. How did it look from the field? Was the crowd decent? I'm guessing HB3 got them rocking on the sheaf and WOB - home-town guy on the easiest to follow events. |

KO- We're doers/athletes....not watchers/fans on this board. I love to watch you pro boyz jack stuff, but I'd MUCH rather throw myself . I WOULDN"T pay to go to a game and watch you studs toss if I can toss myself anywhere - even practice.Sure I'm INTERESTED in who wins ya'lls contests(only because I've met lots of ya'll and like you personally) , but ya'll are a very small elite club that 99% of us have NO chance of being in and your tosses usually are so much better than ours that it seems unreal .I care alot more about how Don or Myles throws than ya'll. Any club I can't get in doesn't really interest me - I'm an American- it's ALL about me............like Adam says , do a recap and let us enjoy the experience through you - 'cause almost none of us have a prayer of even getting past the ropes. .......This is NOT a criticism of pros - just one opinion of why we(ams) aren't like bunch of sychophantic(sp) bodybuilder wanna-bes.................we ARE tossers - just not as good as ya'll. |

Speak for yourself. There are a bunch, myself included, of fans on this board. One of the coolest things that happened to me all weekend happened while i was sitting in the airport on Monday. Phone rings and i look down to see that it's Ken Lowther calling me. He's calling to give me congrats on my stones, from one big stone thrower to another i guess. That is a retired thrower, and now obviously a fan who still reads the board. That phone call made my day. |

The side style is just what you think it is. Left shoulder facing the bar, swing the weight on your right side and throw it over. It's not my hammer throwing that drags me down, it's my body, lol! I have a torn hip flexor, so i had to throw the hammer with no blades, and when i release 90% of my weight is all on my right leg. With Celtic being decathalon scoring, i knew it was gonna hurt me bad. I took one throw in both hammers and passed all the other attempts. I eeked out a 103+ and 82+ this way. I hope to be healed and ready by next season. |

I think it does as well.
The festival was indeed packed. The weather could not have been any better, which im sure was a huge contributor. And, of course, HB3 had the crowd jacked! |

Are you kidding me? Half the time after a games we end up in Ryan's hotel room watching throwing videos. Seriously, one time we spent half an hour just comparing Ali Gunn's hammer technique to Bruce Aitken's.
We live for this stuff. |

OK, so in a six-event games, no strongman stuff included, this guy beats the top three at Bethlehem and ties the current world champion. Two months later, he's second in the WSM. So why is his name almost never mentioned here? |
