A great big THANKS to Ryan Seckman for hosting yet another great highland games!  This year was fantastic, the weather was absolutely beautiful (thank you God) and all the athletes were great.  I judged a great group of B's on Saturday, and had a great time throwing in my first 40-49 Mens' Masters on Sunday.  Terri Hunt, you're just plain fun to be around!  A great attitude for a Canadian!   Paul (a.k.a Phil!), you're one great stone thrower! All you guys were great to throw with.  Brent, how about going to A once in a while to give the rest of us a chance at some gold??

It was a real treat to have Ryan Vierra out there giving pointers.  I think I learned a lot from you, if only I could put them into use now!  This was a great way to start the year off for some of us!  See you all later! ===Al "The Highlander" Kessel

Agreed.  Wonderful games Ryan, thank you.  I think this was the most competitive B class I've ever seen (definitely the largest).

Brent, thank you for judging on Saturday.  You did a tremendous job.

Thanks to everyone who made traveled from out of state and helped make this game a success.  I enjoyed seeing the familiar faces and some new ones.

Good luck to everyone this year!

Weather was great.  Our Canadian friends got their sunburn, er, suntans for the year.  The three teenagers blew me away.  Sheer raw enjoyment of the activities.  Remember when we used to just throw?  Now we think so much we start to stink.  Is my foot right, is my breathing right, am I arching right?  You kids were a blast to  watch.

Ryan Seckman, excellent job.  Great host.  Well laid out field.  The one gallon pump action container of hand cleaner and the pop up paper towels were a great idea.  Other ADs, take note, little things mean a lot and hand cleaner does not break the bank.  Weights were all in great shape and had  new paint jobs. The weights were written in big letters and numerals so we did not need our reading glasses.

The Quality and the deph of the athletes in all fields and classes were most impressive and probably the best if not the  best I've seen since 1988.  Very impressive marks for so early a meet in the year.

Many thanks to all the judges for your hard work and fairness and your abundant knowledge of the rules and your smoothness in keeping the games moving on schedule.

Hear, hear!

A big hand to all, and esp. Ryan - good to see that the # athletes keeps growing! Just an excellent day for all I think, weather was great (even the Sat mini-tornado/microburst was neat)...I'll get that d@mn caber next time!!! Meal tix were there also, and that was just icing on the whole thing...

Def gonna be back for '06! Was fantastic to see so many of the same folks there again. Thanks to all those who traveled as well (UT, NM, MO, KS, ALASKA!, Toronto!) and helped make it hella fun.

Extra thanks also to Brent, and all the B's! WAAAAY FUN DAY!

Throw far y'all, great start for '05 season!

Yes, outstanding day.  The Burchett men were something to see, my prediction for KC is that they take First and Second. . . (Nathan, Issac). . without much problem. . . and set a couple field records.

Okay, it's good to be in Arizona in the winter time, but I will have to say it's even better to be home! We all had a blast and it was great to be able to put some faces with names, etc.  Wished I could have stayed and thrown with the "Old Guys" but the guys I threw with on Saturday were first class. Now it's time to start the practice... I had fun with the challenge Caber, Terry, don't cry about getting whupped.
Brett, thanks for judging and I'll hopefully get to compete with you someday soon. Why don't you come up here to the Midwest?
The most fun for me was watching Isaac set a new record for the 190's. He was really happy about that! Thanks for the hospitality.

Ryan that was the best games I have ever been to. This was my 4th time competing at Mesa and it was clearly the best yet. I think you should have a class on how to hold the games to the other AD's in AZ.

I thought I was going to do good in the 190 class but I was blown away with Nathan, and Issac. I wish to be young again.  I can not wait to see everyone again.

Now I am heading to the gym to train

Oh, got a request about the record that Isaac set. It was in the WOB, 16'  6''.  He maxed out the standard and had to switch to the other one and then had to throw the opposite direction. His 16 foot throw was about a foot over the bar. He just couldn't keep the momentum going for 17.  Jerry had the crowd going and it was a fun thing to see! It was a good birthday present as he just turned 17.

Has the weight of the implement - and since this is the
lightweight class, the weight of the thrower - been
checked? The judge or AD has to verify the record for it
to be added to the records list.

Adam,

Yes, they verified the implement and we had weigh-ins first thing. I think he was WAY within the 190 limit.  It was quite an impressive thing to watch.  He used the spin technique very effectively.  ---Al

This is Ryan We took the weight from the ground to the scale and it weighed 42.3 lbs we also made sur the height of the weight was ok and re -weighed Isaac in at 187lb kilted and cleated..  We also had 2 judges verify the height before and after the throw on the tapes on both sides..

  Issac,

Congrats!  You and Nathan will have to give this lightweight some major pointers.  You making that height is comparable to that 100lb college girl eating that 6 pound hamburger in under 3 hours.  Hope to see you next week at the Shamrock Games.

For those who did not stick around and get their certificates and the men's masters 50-59 and 60+. I will get the certs printed and hand them over to Ryan for him to mail out. Also, from some of the suggestions I am going to modify the scoring system to show placement for each event and overall placement. I'm going to try and have the rev B ready for the Tulsa games. Any other suggestions, please send me a note. Scores will be in the database within the next couple weeks.
Ryan, thanks for everything!!!!!!

THank you to all who came out to our games this year.  I am confident that everyone enjoyed the day and I know the crowd did as was heard from the loud cheers.  We were free from injury this year and that is reason enough to celebrate..

Thankyou to those who helped with set up and tear down...  I could use a good pointer on getting more help in take down please???

I missed the part about it not being a 56.  I would say that is till probably a really good throw for a 17 year old though.

187lb and 17.  I thow the 42lb and it put me to shame.  I don't think it makes a difference if it was not 56lb

Plus I don't do a good job at proof reading.  Thowing the 42 can hurt.  It should be THROW.

Ryan,

Thanks for a wonderful game!!

I cannot imagine the time and effort you, and many others put into the games to make them the quality games they are.  Your efforts were so noticed and very appreciated.

Good Crowds, Great Weather, Wonderful Athletes and many, many great throws.  However, the most important result for me was the chance to meet old friends and to make new ones.

The best thing I carry away from your games are many wonderful memories.

Thanks!!!

Daryl,

I think I might have had a couple of field records, not sure until Ryan gets the scores posted ---- like he doesn't have a real job or anything else to do --- no worries Ryan -- no hurry.

It was great to meet you, your sons and daughter.  Glad you got home okay.  Your kids are top-notch and man, what throwers, chips off the old block eh??  Was enjoyable to talk with you and your clan.  You'd always be welcome in Utah!!!!

Sorry you missed the Master's Class due to your travel plans, always fun to throw with that group.  It was also a treat to have the 60+ guys throwing in our group.  Verne, Dean and Frank are just great guys and real athlete heros, so impressed that they do what they do.

How do you add to such responses? Ryan keeps pushing the envelope and such great people come from all around. I had as much fun with my B's as I did throwing Sunday -  they were great and treated one another with the best in sportsmanship and comraderie and best of all they helped me with my Knob Creek.  Alec was fun to watch as he got 1-2' PR in every throw of his WFDs. Great to see the legendary Burchett's and meet the patriarch himself. Good to see Jeff, Josh and John from Utah as they solicited interest in the Lehigh games coming up. Jeff, lets see that World Record soon. Mindy and Ryan thanks for the stone help. Watch Mindy throw stone sometime. So many good people/sportsmen-women, you wish you had more time to chat. Great guys in my class were an honor to throw with.

The funny thing that I didnt know was that i was more wiped out from judging Saturday night than from throwing Sunday. I got to sit more when I threw and I estimated about 150 tape-pulls. I have some pictures I can send out next week when I get home: Cherie and I, Terry, Me, Ryan; Wourld Record picture of Daryl, Art, Ryan, Nathan and Issac (not a thow picture but a group picture in between throws.) My Killer-B's and others. Great way to kick off the year and I hope to see you all again at a games this year. There are out of state people that are now required to attend all future Mesa games: Dana, Coach Buchanan and Dave from CO; The three J's from Utah; Terry and Colleen - of course; Cherie "What I lack in height, I triple in Energy and Warmth" Childs; Mindy and Mike; and several others. We did miss our New Mexico Bretheren and I hope to see them when I get to their games this year.

Cherie: Kirstie says she wants to throw at Vegas (woo-hoo), she was excercising her third Scottish gene this year at the games (selling) and made great money. And it was us that got to throw with the women! I was glad to see your throw and measure it.

Best Health and Competing to the people Im fortunate to know.

Ryan, well done, it was one of the best az games or games
anywhere that i have been to. the field/grass was in excellent
condition, good equipement, good judges and annoucing,
great crowd. having a schedule and following it really helped,
filling in caber and weight holes in caber area as we went
along was a great idea to prevent injuries. the 50 and 60 guys i
competed with were fun and supportive. really fun to have co.
ut. az, calif, wa. represented in the same comp. it reflects the
fact that you put on a good game that guys will travel to attend.
ithink more guys need to help put stuff away on sunday to help
you out. as groups finish with there equipement, ex. big cabers
and that equipe is no longer needed, the judge of that group
and throwers need to take down and put away that stuff before
they leave the field. i think more would if you main that a point
at the beginning of sundays comp. and reminded the judges at
midday sunday. not fair to you and the last few guys and wifes
to leave you will all the work at the end of the day on sunday.
you did a great job but sometimes it doesnt pay to be too nice
and not assertive enough. plus most guys would pitch in if they
were reminded.
