okay, sorry I'm confused (as usual) but the new database is going to report the results from each comp in terms of decathalon scoring - with the winning throw being 1000 points? Or the american record being 1000 points? But - each comp will give you a cumulative overall tally of points (i.e. 6350 points) and then the invitational rankings for the Celtic will be a cumulative average of all of our performances? Please Zartan, dreadnock brain hurts... can you clarify? thanks |

Whoah there Will! You're starting to hurt my head too! I never said any of this will be used for any Championship rankings! It could of course, but I haven't heard from the powers that be that this is what they want. This change only affects NASGA rankings. An example would be a Games with 7 events. Each event except the caber is scored with the American record on that date being 1000 points. The caber is scored with the best toss of that Games being 1000 points. The total possible points would be 7000 points. If you scored a total of 5500 points, your NASGA score would be 5500/7000*100 = 78.57. If over the season your NASGA scores were 78.57, 80, 70, and 82 your 'ranked' NASGA score for the year would be the average of these, which would be 77.64. Clear as mud?

Just a quick question on decathalon scoring as I've only ever competed once were we used it. If the American record is broken during a games, is the athlete awarded 1000+ points for that event and the other athletes scores are still based on the old record? Or is he given 1000 even points, and all the other scores are then re-adjusted to reflect the new record? I don't recall anyone fully explaining this to me. Thanks

Tim - The only area that I know of that uses decathlon (not decath-a-lon) scoring is the one covered by RMSA and according to their website, rmsa.org, no, the numbers that 1000 points is based on never change and, yes, one can score more than 1000 points in an event. Go to their site and check it out!

The powers that be are the organizations that run the championship games. The normal NASGA rankings are decided by what the athletes want.
