Push press: 1x10 with bar; 1x5@95; 1x5@135; 2x5@195 superset with 2x5 45# dumbbell uppercuts; 1x4 superset with dumbell uppercuts.

Too much weight on the uppercuts. They acted more like a light strength set than a power set and tired me out for my final set of push presses.

Deadlift: 1x10@135; 1x5@225; 1x5@295; 2x5@385, 1x6@385; superset 3x5 95# good mornings

Pullup sets: 5 strict, 5 kipping; 4 strict, 8 kipping; 2.5 (I almost got it!) strict, 8 kipping; 0 strict, 7 kipping.

Band pull aparts (many) for shoulder health

Many variations of ball slams (side scoops, two arm front slams, one arm front slams, wall balls to the ceiling) done in rapid succession, three times.

Not the best conditioning workout, but I was pretty tired from four hours of throwing from the day before, and it got my core pretty thoroughly.

3/2/16
Power snatch: 1x3@95; 1x3@115; 1x3@145; 2x3@165.
Power clean: 1x3@165; 1x3@185; 3x3@210
Clean form needs some work. I'm having trouble getting a good second pull.

I hadn't planned on going heavy today, especially two days after 3x5@ 385 on deadlifts, but Robinson tagged me in a video on Facebook of him doing 485 for 60 yards, so I wanted to top him.

Farmer's walks with trap bar, about 100': 140, 230, 320; 485 for 74'6" (yes, I used my tape measure); then, 485 for 58'.

It's amazing how much less taxing trap bar deadlifts are than straight bar. All I wanted to do on my last DL max after I got home from the gym was sleep and stretch my low back. I was fine after this, and it was 15# more than my straight bar DL max.

10 rounds EMOM: kneeling long jump to standing long jump to about a 30 yard sprint.

3/3-5: I threw some. Sheaf is coming along nicely, as I was clearing the roughly 25' power line with ease. I decided to fully commit to rotational throwing on stone. Growing pains suck. On 2/28 I hit 41'+ gliding; I haven't hit 39' yet spinning, but I will get there.

3/6: rest/stretch/walk with my lovely wife.

3/7:
Only working sets listed:
Back squat: 2x3x315#; 1x6x315#. Working sets superset with explosive good mornings: 3x5x115#

Incline: This was the first time in months I've been able to do barbell bench or incline with no pain in my left shoulder. The weights sucked, and I couldn't superset with a power movement because it hurt the one time I tried it, but I consider this a big success.
1x3x135#; 2x5x135#; 1x9x155#

One arm rows: light, just to keep the shoulders feeling OK after presses: 3x10x80#.

Footwork drills for this crazy spinning stone throw thing I decided to do.

3/8: Throwing with Josh and Jeremy at Cedar Hill.
5 full HWD throws to about 27'
Many stone throws, the best of which was 38'9". Growing pains.

3/9: I predict push presses and deadlifts. More to follow.

3/12 marks the FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON!!!

3/9 expanded.
Working sets listed.
Push press: 3x3x205#
Superset with 3x5 one arm, dynamic landmine presses with a 35# plate on the bar.

Deadlift: 3x3x405#
Superset with 3x5 broad jump hurdles holding a 20# med ball.

20 pullups: 7, 5, 4, 2, 2; 21 more kipping: 13, 8

I hate pullups.

I didn't AMRAP the final sets of my lifts because I have a game this weekend.

Throwing this evening, hopefully with new blood.

3/12: Johnson City Highland Games
2nd overall to Laird Robinson, whom I think had a career day, hitting 30'4" on HWD and 60' something on LWD. I'm very happy for him and even more motivated to beat him in Columbia in three weeks.

40'x" on stone. My first throw was a spin; the following two were gliding, including the 40 footer. 2nd place to Justin Harris
28'5" on HWD--games PR. 2nd place to Laird Robinson.
57' something on LWD--games PR. 2nd place Laird Robinson.
Something terrible on heavy hammer. 4th place: Laird Robinson was first, Justin Harris second, Daniel Goulet third.
91' something on light hammer. 2nd place to Laird Robinson.
I can't remember if I hit 24' and missed 26' on sheaf, of if I hit 26' and missed 28'. I'm pretty sure it was the latter. 3rd place behind Goulet and Robinson.
13'6" on WOB. I wanted to hit 14" really badly, but my calves cramped up before hitting it, and I think my next two suffered for that. 1st place
88 degrees on caber. I only picked it once, on my final attempt. That's what happens when you don't pick one for four months. 2nd place to Laird Robinson.

I really need to focus on hammer and stone: hammer because those numbers are awful right now, and stone because I need to be strongest in that event to do well going forward.

Squats and incline today.

Light hammer drills: walking forwards and backwards, swinging left handed and right handed; walking side to side, left handed and right handed. I did this a lot, and I really like how it helped me feel the weights and allowed me to move with it.

McKimm drills until the hammer broke. Damn.

I felt like my drive down from the catch position was getting better, but there was still some slack in it. I also felt like I was using my body weight to move the weights better, but I don't know how that would translate into distance, as I didn't get in any full throws. Damn.

HWD: cast and drop x 5 or 6. Line drills, four or five times. One turns x 5 or 6. Full throws until I hit Laird Robinson's mark from the past weekend of 30'4". I hit 30'5," eclipsing my previous best by nearly two feet. I think it took seven throws.

I adjusted the orbit on my final turn, dropping it down more, and allowing me to get more air under the weight. It was pretty super. I think there is more there, and I can't wait to try it with LWD.

16 ounce curls. I was really trying to focus on form, so I didn't get too much of a pump out of it. Mind/body connection and all. There were pork burritos too. And cheese dip. Yum.

I foolishly tried a RM test in the morning. I got one push press and zero deadlifts.

Pullups, pulldowns, low cable rows for accessory work.

Sheaf and LWD that evening. Sheaf feels very good. I'm not blocking anymore, and I'm getting better pop for it.

LWD: many drills, a few throws. Throwing with my plate loaded weight, it's hard to track the effect of the new orbit.

Lacrosse ball rolling along my neck, spine, and all around my shoulders. It hurt, and I was really sore the next day, but it was a good kind of hurt.

3/20: Finish caber and move it to the park. I can't wait to try it out.

3/21: Olympic lift testing.

Power clean: worked up to a 1RM of 255#. It wasn't pretty, but I got it up.

Power snatch: worked up to a 1RM of 200#. Again, it wasn't pretty, but I got the job done and set PRs in both lifts.

3x5 rotational KB work: left foot to right front rack, then the other side, at 50#.

Rotational movements with the cable machine: 3x5 at... I can't remember.

EMOM for 9 minutes (10 rounds): kneeling broad jump to standing broad jump to sprint.

4 rounds: 30 on 30 off for four rounds on the rower. Pace varied little, from about 1:33 and change to 1:32 and change.

Good day. Two PRs. It felt good to hit 200 on power snatch.

WOB and caber with Jeremy, Josh, and a co-worker of Josh's.
WOB went well. I think I need to wait a little longer before starting my pull.

Caber: It fell on Josh. We took him to the ER to get stitches. Were he a more diminutive man, he would be in a body cast right now.

Yes, Josh Sharp. He's ok. It was pretty scary, but it wound up not being that bad, considering a tree fell on his forehead and all. Eight (I think) stitches and a concussion.

3/25
Got in a few sheaf throws before taking Hannah to ballet class. I thought I was throwing some damn bombs, but it turns out my sheaf lost weight. Damn. They were still good throws.
Went to the gym so Connor could play Star Wars on Xbox and did some wrist mobility, forearm soft tissue work, and shoulder opening.

3/26
Finishing up my deload week with a good dose of a yoga standing series, followed by 5x3 clean and jerks at 125, focusing on speed, and treating them almost like throws.
3x5 rotational work on the cable machine.
10 rounds on the rower: 100m, 90 seconds rest.

3/27
Open stone: 5x standing, no reverse.
5x standing, reverse
A few glide drills (did I mention that I decommitted from the spin?)
Full glide throws x something, probably 10ish. It felt pretty good, pretty relaxed and fluid, though I'm still not pushing the flag past 40-41 feet.

Hammer:
Some walking drills, right and left handed (forward and back ten steps, wife to side ten steps)
5x one turns
5x two turns
5-10 three turns, until the damn hammer broke.
I finally felt like I was driving through my feet. I felt good about hammer. 73' best throw, with my awkward 20 pound plate loaded thing.

3/29/2016
Speed Block, Week 1, Day 1
12x3@60% every 0:45
Back squat: 135x3, 185x3, 200x10x3
Incline: 95x3, 115x11 (I think. My timer messed up, so I could be off a round or two)
Good mornings: 3x10@115 one minute rest between rounds
Dumbell bench: 3x10@50 each hand, one minute rest between rounds
Lat pulldowns: 10 EMOM for five rounds at 140
Band pull aparts: 3x25 untimed

A little discomfort on my left shoulder, but nothing too bad. There was some noticeable tension on the left side of my neck after all was said and done, but the next morning it felt good. I have to remember to always incorporate pulling movements to counteract the pushing of the main lifts.

4RFT: 200' uneven farmer's walk (two plates one side, one on the other), 50#KB OH carry, 100' each hand, 10 GHD situps. 10:20. Interesting core stimulus, though as a metcon it was obviously put together without much thought. Good to do GHDs though, except that the foot brace hurts the top of my feet.

3/30
Light hammer work:
Walking, 10 steps forward and backward, 10 steps side to side, left handed and right handed.
One winds x5
Two winds x5
Broken hammer. I need to break down and get Goulet to make me one.
I got to 90 with two winds and a shitty hammer, so that's not bad. It felt pretty good.

Sheaf:
Bottom drills x5
Full throws x10-20
I was hitting 24 consistently, and I'm not sure how far above the branch I was getting.

Apparently the kids at the park think I'm training for the Olympics.

Speed block, week one, day two
3x12@60% on the 0:45s
Push press at 135
Deadlift at 255

5RFT: 100m row, 5 95# power snatches: 4:42

I now have donuts. Nom nom.

I won't get in my third lifting day this week because of Tartan Day South. I can't wait to get to Columbia!
Goals: 42' stone, 30, HWD, 60' LWD, 75' heavy hammer, 100' light hammer, 14' WOB, I don't really know what to expect on sheaf, it being the first time I've used a 20# bag in a game, and I hope to pick the caber all three times.

4/02: Tartan Day South
4th overall out of seven A's. Going into the game, I would have been happy with that, but when I didn't earn top three, I was rather disappointed. I was out by one point. I know now that I can compete with these guys.

Braemar: 33' 4th place. This was disappointing. I had second until the final round, and I set up my throw badly.

Open stone: 38'8.5" 2nd place. 18 pound, awkwardly shaped stone. I'm ok with this.

HWD: 28' 11" 4th place. Games PR, but I know I have more in me. I never felt like I hd weights dialed in. I kept under rotating and hugging the right side of the trig. On my best throw, I didn't really apply force strongly until the final orbit.

LWD: 61'4" I'm happy with the distance, but it still didn't feel great. The throws went foul, 55', 61'4".

Heavy hammer: 76'1" 5th place. Games PR. I am thinking about this too much still. I can grow greatly in hammer.

Caber: 30° last place. I suck still at caber, this was a tough one, and it was windy. Whippy cyprus caber. It really sucked. I have an opportunity for lots of growth here too, especially now that I have one with which to practice.

Sheaf, 20#: 26' 2nd place. PR. As this was my first game with a 20# sheaf, I was absolutely thrilled with this. Daniel Goulet told Mark to stop blocking on his throws, and I used that advice too, getting a 20# bag two feet higher than a 16# bag a few weeks ago in Johnson City.

WOB: 15' 2nd place. I was shooting for 14', so 15 was something special. This was the highlight of my game.

4/5 My boy's birthday
HWD: 5x cast and drops
Line drills
5x one turns.
5 or so full throws.
I was beat from the previous day's work, so numbers were awful.

Hammer: my usual walking drills with the heavy hammer.
Light hammer throws in a triangle with Jeremy and Josh. We discussed technique a bit, trying to figure out what's best. I think we got some things figured out.

4/6 power block, week two, day two.
Shoulder and neck mobility work. Ouch.
10x3@65% push press (145), deadlift (275) on the:45s
7-6-5-4 pullups. They felt good. No shoulder pain.

10 AMRAP 5 wall balls, 3HSPU, 1 power clean@225
8 rounds and one wall ball.
This was much harder at 225 than at 205.

Caber
5x pick and carry
5-10 full throws. No turns. Knox came by and tried to pick it. He of course failed because everyone does their first few times.

4/8 5x3@95% power clean and jerk, power snatch.
C&J: 3 working sets at 220. They felt awful.
Snatch: 3 working sets at 170. They felt better.
3x5 seated box jumps with 30# med ball
3x5 one legged jumps
4RFT:10 bar facing burpees, 5 135# power snatch
6:02

4/9 heavy hammer, more caber with Mark.
Hammer: a few walking drills
3x one wind
3x two
10+ three winds. Hit 78 feet, getting more comfortable with technique adjustments, though I'm not there yet. I hope to hit 90' this year. I think it's possible. Mark hit a few PRs

Caber:
I don't know how many. No drills.
I found that holding it higher up helped me get more hip action and quickness. I still need to figure out the sweet spot though. Mark got a good pick actually picking it instead of doing what Jason does.

A kid wanted to see something so Mark got his light weight. I threw it twice and hit 60'.
We goofed around with sheaf a little too.

235x5x2, 1x5
Incline: working more off feel than percentages for DB incline: 60# dumbells, 5x2, 1x5
superset: 4x10 TRX high rows, tricep extensions.
Superset: 3x10 GHD situps, back extensions.

I almost did a metcon--I even picked up a 70# kettlebell, thinking I might swing it a few times... but I didn't. Inspiration was lacking, and I wanted to get Connor home to eat, since we got to the gym late because we were planting azaleas before Hannah went to a make-up ballet class. I love to see how happy she is after a dance class. She even did some plies and tendues for me, sweet girl. She also managed to rip four holes in her tights on the drive home. Also, those supersets got the heart pumping a good bit.

Connor has karate this evening, so I probably won't get to throw today. Maybe a little, but I need to mow the damn yard.

I apologize for getting off topic, but it's my training log, so I can write whatever the hell I want.

I watched Connor do birthday burpees at karate, which, combined with mowing the yard and trying to slow down time as my little boy continues to grow into a beautiful young man, was pretty tiring.

Speed block, week 3, day 2.
8x2@70% push press (150), Deadlift (300).
1x5 on final set of each.
30 pullups, broken up in many sets. No shoulder pain. Time to build strength here.
3x10 120# one arm rows.

Metcon:
I started to do Diane (21-15-9 225# DL, HSPU), but it was all I had to get through the round of 15. 8:20 of whatever you want to call what I did.

It amazes me how much kipping that many HSPUs after doing that many deadlifts kills my low back.

Heavy hammer
Walking drills: full circuit with 10 and 15# hammer
Heavy hammer: Full throws x 10ish to 78+
Speed felt better, positions felt better, but timing felt worse. Overall good session. I think I'm making good progress on this. I need to try and push through the right hand to increase the orbit on my final wind and lengthen my arms. I think I can hit my goal of 90' by the end of the season once the timing gets better as I get more comfortable.

Stone:
Braemar: 5x no reverse
5x reverse to about 30'
Open: 11 throws, with a best of 41'. Meh.

With all the pressing from the day before, I'm OK with my stone distances. However, I seem to hit a few good throws to about 41', think I'm going to hit a PR, and then lose it for the rest of the session.
